Chapter 44: A Profitable Deal

It was a bank card.
I raised an eyebrow. What did this mean?
“There’s one million in there.”
I didn’t look at the card. “Are you planning to bribe me with this money?”
Father Zhou’s eyelids twitched. “What are you talking about? You are the young mistress of the Zhou family. Giving you this money is to ensure you live comfortably. A Yan also said that person wasn’t sent by him. If this matter is investigated, the outcome won’t be good for anyone. You don’t want things to get that tense, do you?”
He spoke persuasively.
I lowered my lashes, feeling a bit wronged. “But I’m really scared. He drugged me today; next time, he might just strangle me…”
“That won’t happen. I will discipline him properly.”
I pursed my lips but still refused to relent.
Father Zhou continued, “I’ve heard about your work at the company. You’re very capable, doing well. Yesterday I even met General Manager Zhang — he spoke highly of you. Mu Yan, you haven’t disappointed me.”
I waited.
I knew he had more to say.
He wanted to silence me. One bank card wouldn’t be enough; more benefits were needed.
“I’ve already instructed them to make you a full-time employee. You no longer need to be an intern; you’ve proven your ability.”
One million, a formal position — it barely satisfied me.
To be honest, if it weren’t for finding out who the shareholder allied with Zhou Zhizi was, keeping that couple alive to check Zhou Chenyang, I really wouldn’t want to deal with this family’s mess.
“Alright… I’ll listen to you.”
Father Zhou nodded in satisfaction. “Go ahead, and call A Yan upstairs as well.”
Why call him up? Surely to reprimand him.
Suppressing the anxiety inside, I stepped out of the room. Once the study door was closed, I quickened my pace, eager to witness Zhou Chenyang being reprimanded.
He really did obey Father Zhou.
He was even kneeling downstairs.
Mother Zhou saw me and hurriedly asked, “Yan Yan, what did your father say to you?”
“Dad told him to come upstairs.”
I still used that form of address; naturally, Mother Zhou understood everything.
She had always doted on her son, but today she didn’t stop him.
“He really should have your father talk to you properly. If you keep going like this, I won’t even recognize you!”
Zhou Chenyang turned silently and went upstairs.
I said to Mother Zhou, “I’m going upstairs to see. If Dad tries to hit him, I can try to stop it.”
Mother Zhou sighed. “You’re still kind-hearted.”
I lowered my head, secretly scoffing.
Kind-hearted? I just wanted to see Zhou Chenyang’s miserable look when he got his comeuppance.

So I never actually stepped through the study door.
Instead, I stood outside, listening through the slightly ajar door.
There was scolding, and the sound of slaps — as if something was striking a person.
“Zhou Chenyang, have you lost your mind?”
“You’ve always been headstrong since childhood. I never interfered and gave you room to grow freely, but did I ever teach you what to do and what not to do?”
“There are some boundaries you can’t cross. Even if you dislike Mu Yan, remember: she is your wife. She represents your honor. If Mu Yan is mistreated, do you know what others will say about you?”
Zhou Chenyang remained silent.
Listening to these words, I couldn’t help but want to laugh. Father Zhou seemed pleased with me on the surface, but throughout this incident, he never stood up for me.
His concern was always for Zhou Chenyang’s reputation.
The Zhou family truly had cold hearts.
...
My phone had died long ago. The first thing I did upon returning to my room was charge it. Just after turning it on, it vibrated.
CanCan: Sister Yan Yan, are you okay?
Only then did I see many missed calls and messages.
All of them were from CanCan.
CanCan: Sister Yan Yan, I’m waiting for you outside the hospital. Where are you? Why aren’t you answering?
CanCan: I’ve brought the things you asked for.
CanCan: Sister Yan Yan, are you alright?
...
At my most desperate, helpless moment, the only one who cared was a colleague I had known for less than a week.
I returned her call and arranged a meeting place.
The first thing CanCan said upon seeing me was concern: “I called you so many times, but you didn’t answer, and later the calls didn’t go through. Sister Yan Yan, are you okay?”
My complexion wasn’t good, but my spirit was still alright. “I’m fine, don’t worry. Let me see what you brought.”
Last night, I hadn’t wasted my time waiting at home. Instead, I contacted CanCan. From when we had eaten together, I knew her family ran a courier company.
I asked her to help investigate Zhou Zhizi’s recent delivery records.
Sure enough, there was a package sent from abroad.
It had the name of a drug on it.
I had originally planned to take this to the hospital, have the doctors test Zhou Zhizi’s blood for residues, and find out if the drugs she was given matched those on the package.
But Zhou Chenyang never gave me the chance.
“No matter what, thank you.” Though it was no longer needed, CanCan received my call late at night without impatience and took the matter seriously.
It moved me deeply.
CanCan waved her hand. “It’s nothing. I’m glad to help. But I don’t quite understand — who was that drug for?”
The drug’s name was clearly written on the receipt. A simple check would reveal its purpose.

CanCan, a girl who had never even dated, blushed and her heart raced just seeing the name of the drug.
“It’s nothing. You helped me, so I’ll treat you to dinner.”
“Sounds good.”
CanCan was innocent and quickly distracted.
I thought for a moment and decided not to tell her. If she knew Zhou Zhizi’s intention, she might be shocked.
Better to keep things simple.
At dusk, I returned home. Upon entering, a drunken man grabbed me.
I nearly thought he was a hooligan and instinctively raised my foot to kick him in a sensitive spot.
A hand pressed down on mine.
A hoarse voice sounded in my ear.
“Again? Do you want to ruin me?”
Hearing that voice, I knew exactly who it was. I pushed him forcefully. He was off guard and stumbled, sitting on the ground.
... That easy?
I looked closely. His face was flushed, his eyes hazy, staring up at me.
“You pushed me.”
I...
This man wasn’t drunk; he must have been possessed!
After being with him for so many years, I had never heard him speak like that.
No.
I vaguely remembered once before.
But that was also when he was drunk. At that time, before I could be shocked, he kissed me and clung to me, so I couldn’t notice anything else.
I gave him a cold glance and walked away.
After what happened, I was ready to fall out with him.
Whether he was drunk or even died on the roadside, it would be none of my concern.
At that moment, Mother Zhou came down the stairs. Seeing Zhou Chenyang sitting on the floor, she went over to help him up, but she clearly overestimated her strength.
She couldn’t lift him at all.
“Yan Yan, come help.”
I pursed my lips, helped pull him up, then immediately let go.
Zhou Chenyang didn’t stand steadily and staggered.
