Chapter 60 Re-investigation
Lu Ranran fell asleep while receiving an IV drip. The ward was dead silent, save for the sound of medicine droplets slowly falling.
She curled up beneath the pristine white bedding, her breathing soft and even, long eyelashes casting delicate shadows beneath her eyelids.
The moonlight outside the window quietly slipped into the ward, spilling over her serene face and adding a gentle radiance to her features.
The bouquet of flowers on the bedside table exuded a faint fragrance, intertwining with the scent of disinfectant to create a strange yet tranquil atmosphere.
Occasionally, the night breeze brushed past the curtains, bringing a hint of chill.
In her drowsy state, Lu Qiqi’s eyelids fluttered gently as she slowly opened them.
A familiar and tender figure came into view—it was Chu Linchen.
He sat beside the bed, his silhouette elongated by the moonlight, blending seamlessly with the surrounding peace.
Chu Linchen’s features appeared exceptionally soft in the dim, warm light.
That warmth seemed capable of dispelling all her illness and unease.
The corners of Lu Qiqi’s lips curved upward unconsciously, gratitude sparkling in her eyes as she whispered softly, "Chu Linchen, thank you..."
Though faint, her voice was laden with deep affection.
Hearing this, ripples of tenderness spread across Chu Linchen’s eyes. He shook his head slightly, a reassuring smile touching the corners of his lips. "It's nothing, I'm here."
Lu Ranran gazed at him, a surge of warmth welling up in her heart.
Inadvertently, Chu Linchen’s gaze swept across Lu Qiqi’s chest. There, a small and exquisite mole appeared vaguely in the moonlight, resembling a droplet of condensed dew, radiating a faint luster.
His heart skipped a beat, and memories rushed back like a rising tide. That night, under the dim lights, he had also seen such a mole on the skin of another woman—equally striking, carrying an indescribable allure.
At that moment, time seemed to freeze. Chu Linchen’s gaze grew deep and complex, the emotions welling up inside him churning like ocean waves, intertwining astonishment, doubt, and an inexplicable throb.
Amidst his shock, Chu Linchen wanted to examine it closely once more, but Lu Qiqi had already turned over to face inward, her curled-up posture lending her an even more fragile air.
He pondered inwardly, waiting for an appropriate moment.
Deep in the night, the air within the ward seemed to have frozen, with only the sound of dripping medication echoing in the ears.
Chu Linchen rose quietly, pretending to adjust the angle of the curtains. Seizing the opportunity, his gaze once again fell secretly upon Lu Qiqi’s back, where the mole remained faintly visible in the moonlight like a hidden star in the night.
However, Lu Qiqi seemed to sense something and shifted slightly. Chu Linchen hastily withdrew his gaze, inwardly regretting the missed opportunity.
Just then, a hurried sound of footsteps echoed from outside the ward, and Assistant Zhao’s figure was the first to come into view.
He wore a hurried expression, clutching a document in his hand with a hint of anxiety in his eyes.
Seeing that Chu Linchen was still inside the ward, he hurried forward and whispered a few words in a low voice.
Hearing this, Chu Linchen frowned slightly, his gaze returning to Lu Qiqi’s serene face, a trace of reluctance flashing in his eyes.
Afterward, he stood up quietly, tenderly tucking the blanket around Lu Qiqi before turning to nod at Assistant Zhao.
The two of them walked out of the ward one after the other. The door clicked shut softly, leaving only a touch of moonlight spilled over Lu Qiqi’s peaceful sleeping face. Tranquility returned to the room, accompanied solely by the sound of dripping medicine echoing in the empty space.
Assistant Zhao stood by the door with a solemn expression, calling out in a low voice, "President Chu."
Chu Linchen turned around, his gaze profound.
"Have you thoroughly investigated what happened that night?" Chu Linchen asked.
Hearing this, Assistant Zhao hurriedly handed over the document in his hand, his expression growing even graver. "President Chu, are you referring to...?"
Chu Linchen’s figure appeared exceptionally upright, resembling an unshakable mountain, while the doubts and unease in his heart surged like an undercurrent, difficult to calm.
Chu Linchen’s voice was low and firm, every single word striking Assistant Zhao’s heart like a heavy hammer: "Are you certain there was nothing wrong with that hotel incident last time?"
Under the moonlight, his gaze was as sharp as an eagle's, capable of piercing through the night and looking straight into the darkest corners of human hearts.
Assistant Zhao’s hand trembled slightly, creasing the edges of the document. He swallowed hard, forcing himself to remain calm. "President Chu, I checked. The surveillance footage shows everything was normal, with no unusual personnel entering or leaving. Furthermore, the hotel’s security measures that night were extremely tight, so it should..."
Before he could finish, Assistant Zhao abruptly stopped, seeing that Chu Linchen’s gaze had grown even more profound, as if concealing endless thoughts and unsolved mysteries.
Chu Linchen’s voice echoed in the quiet corridor, carrying an unquestionable resoluteness: "Something was wrong that night. Investigate it."
His words were like a sharp blade in the cold wind, tearing through the silence of the night.
Moonlight filtered through the window lattice, casting mottled patterns across his face and revealing an expression of steadfastness and sternness.
Assistant Zhao’s pupils constricted slightly as he felt unprecedented pressure. He nodded hastily, fine beads of sweat already beading on his forehead.
With a gaze as unfathomable as an abyss, Chu Linchen turned and walked with steady strides toward the end of the corridor, every step seemingly crushing the mysteries of the night.
Assistant Zhao watched his retreating figure with mixed emotions, gripping the document tightly as if holding the key to unlocking all secrets.
Lu Qiqi was fast asleep and heard nothing of the commotion outside.
Moonlight filtered through the gap in the curtains, spilling over her serene face and plating her with a soft silver radiance.
Her breathing was gentle and even, resembling a light feather swaying slowly in the quiet air.
The wind outside the window brushed softly against the curtains, bringing a trace of coolness along with the peace and serenity of the night.
Lu Qiqi’s eyelashes cast delicate shadows beneath her eyelids, trembling slightly with every breath, much like the moment a butterfly flutters its wings, eager to take flight.
Chu Linchen closed the ward door gently. As he turned around, even the night seemed awed by his steady stride, retreating in submission.
With a blazing, torch-like gaze fixed directly on Assistant Zhao, his tone carried unquestionable authority: "Investigate what happened that day thoroughly. Do not let a single detail slip. I want to know who, or what, left traces behind that shouldn't have been there that night."
Under the moonlight, Chu Linchen’s shadow was drawn long, forming a sharp contrast with Assistant Zhao’s nervous figure.
The sweat on Assistant Zhao’s forehead gleamed in the dim light. He took a deep breath and nodded heavily.
"Understood," Assistant Zhao nodded and said.
His fingertips turned slightly pale from the force with which he gripped the document, a resolute light flashing in his eyes.
With profound eyes, a fleeting glint crossing his brows, and tightly pressed lips, Chu Linchen emanated a fierce, oppressive aura.
