Chapter 45: Something Happened
The meal was a very pleasant one.
In truth, the atmosphere at the Cheng family home was quite similar to that of the Wen family, with the only possible difference being that the Chengs had a son, so Mr. and Mrs. Cheng were not as indulgently protective of their child as Wen Shaoru and Tan Fang were.
Overall, Wen Jianan felt it was nice, but merely nice.
As for Cheng He, she felt no flutter of excitement in her heart.
Her parents said it was a suitable match, and she also felt it was suitable.
That was all.
At first, Wen Jianan had been quite resistant, but as time passed and her perspective shifted, she finally decided to give it a try with Cheng He.
Although at the beginning of this relationship he had kept things hidden because of Cheng Zifeng, Wen Jianan felt that she had also tried to use him at the start, so they were even.
Moving forward, she was willing to continue dating him; if possible, marrying him wouldn't be out of the question.
It would be a happy ending for everyone.
After dinner, Wen Jianan sat at the Cheng household for a while longer, and Cheng's aunt also came over.
This was considered her first time visiting as Cheng He's girlfriend. To show how much they valued her, as she was leaving, Mrs. Cheng stuffed a red envelope into her hand.
"Auntie, this really isn't necessary..."
Wen Jianan felt a bit awkward.
Mrs. Cheng's attitude was firm: "It is necessary. You're a child and don't understand, just take it because Auntie is giving it to you, be a good girl."
After a bit of modest push-and-pull between the two, Cheng He couldn't watch anymore and accepted it on her behalf.
It felt quite thick.
Once they got in the car, Cheng He joked and asked her to guess how much Mrs. Cheng had put in the envelope.
Wen Jianan pressed her lips together. She had actually guessed it, but still shook her head.
"Then go back and open it to see."
Wen Jianan agreed.
When she arrived home, Wen Jianan went to her room and opened it.
Sure enough, as she expected, ten thousand and one yuan.
Ordinary couples might take a photo and send it to each other, but Wen Jianan did not. She didn't know how to chat with Cheng He about such topics, so she secretly decided to find an opportunity next time to buy some gifts and return the favor.
Tan Fang learned about this matter as well.
Probably having heard from Cheng's aunt that Wen Jianan was going to the Cheng family for dinner, Tan Fang had called early in the morning to instruct Wen Jianan to mind her manners and etiquette.
At that moment, she called again to follow up.
Upon learning that the Cheng family's etiquette was so thoughtful, Tan Fang was immensely satisfied.
Whether the money was a lot or a little didn't matter; the most crucial thing was that Wen Jianan was valued by the Cheng family, meaning she would surely be cherished by her parents-in-law if she married into the family in the future.
A mother cared about nothing more than this.
The happier Tan Fang was, the more Wen Jianan felt that her decision to be with Cheng He was not wrong.
"Mom, how is your health recently? Does your old ailment still act up?"
"Quite good, it doesn't act up much anymore."
Wen Jianan softly murmured, "Your summer vacation should be starting soon. When I get back, I should be able to take some time off and spend it properly with you."
Tan Fang smiled with gratification, but still said verbally, "No need, you're busy with work. I'll wait until your dad finishes his current busy spell and takes a vacation, then we can go out for a trip."
Wen Jianan said nothing, silently planning to start preparing for her resignation handover as soon as she returned.
Aside from the Qunteng project, she had to hand everything else over.
It just depended on who Wei Ming assigned to take over.
The next day, Wen Jianan handled the lease termination matters and returned to Miancheng with the rest of her team.
As the airplane ascended into the skies above Yancheng, Wen Jianan looked down at the city, harboring a premonition that she would return.
They arrived in Miancheng at night. With no need to return to the company, the group parted ways after exiting the airport.
Li Ruoruo was the first to leave.
Wen Jianan was picked up and taken home by Wen Shaoru.
Along the way, Wen Jianan was still monitoring the data in real-time.
Qunteng had followed her advice, releasing preview teaser clips on the official accounts of various platforms as well as their official website.
From all aspects currently, the data looked very impressive and was still climbing in real-time.
Wen Jianan felt both happy and nervous.
She was happy that the project had reached its concluding stage and that the data looked so promising right after the teaser dropped.
She was nervous because she didn't know if it would reach new heights later on, and whether the product would achieve positive and favorable results after its official launch.
Data was an advertising professional's proof of achievement.
Wen Jianan and Wen Shaoru chatted about this.
Though past fifty, Wen Shaoru remained cultured and handsome. He chuckled, glanced at his daughter, and suggested, "I have tomorrow off. How about I accompany you to the temple to burn some incense and pray?"
Wen Jianan used to believe in these things quite a bit. For the sake of Liang Yuxiu, she didn't know how many gods she had prayed to or how many Buddhas she had worshiped; later, with her heart as tranquil as still water, she stopped believing in them much.
But now...
"Okay!"
For the sake of her work, she had to make a trip.
"Then let's wake up early tomorrow. Our family will have breakfast, you and I can send your mom off to school together, and then we'll go."
"Mm!"
Father and daughter returned home, and Tan Fang had not yet gone to sleep. Concerned that Wen Jianan might be hungry, she had prepared a late-night snack for her to line her stomach.
After Wen Jianan finished eating, the family finally went to rest.
The next morning, father and daughter as promised drove Tan Fang to school, then prepared some incense and pastries before heading to the locally renowned Wenguang Temple.
Wen Jianan was very earnest and sincere, and even deliberately went to pray for a career talisman.
She prayed not only for the project, but also so that she could find a better job after leaving Fidu!
Father and daughter strolled around the temple and had some food.
In the afternoon, Wen Jianan went to work.
Since they had returned very late last night, she had applied to the company for the team members to rest that morning, and in the afternoon they would all return for a meeting to report on their work and current progress.
Just as Wen Shaoru dropped her off downstairs and before she even stepped into the corporate building, Xiao Jiang's call came through.
The ringtone sounded inexplicably urgent. When Wen Jianan answered, her voice was equally anxious and flustered.
"Sister Nan, I called you so many times just now, why didn't you pick up? Come back quickly, something happened!"
Wen Jianan's heart skipped a beat, but she said calmly, "Don't panic, I'm downstairs now and will be right up."
"Okay, hurry up, we're all in the meeting room."
Wen Jianan hung up the phone and glanced at her call logs. Earlier, to chat with Wen Shaoru, she had set her phone to silent, and only now did she see the many missed calls.
Not only from Xiao Jiang, but also from Wei Ming, Chen Ling, and even Cheng He and Liang Yuxiu.
Wen Jianan had a premonition that things did not look good.
Coincidentally, the elevator arrived, and she hurried inside.
By the time she reached the company floor upstairs, she was a bit out of breath, but still maintained her composure.
Walking into the meeting room, Wen Jianan saw that all the team members were present, including Chen Ling, who should have been on leave.
Having applied for two days of compensatory leave last night, she should have been planning to handle family matters.
Everyone's expression was very solemn, as if facing a formidable enemy.
Wen Jianan pressed her lips together and walked in: "What's wrong?"
Xiao Jiang lowered her voice and said, "We're waiting for President Wei to come over. Qunteng just called him again. He's on the call, and told us to wait a moment."
How serious could a matter be for Qunteng to contact Wei Ming directly?
Wen Jianan dared not imagine.
Her expression turned grave as she walked over and sat down beside Chen Ling and Xiao Jiang, wanting to find out what had happened before Wei Ming arrived.
