Chapter 47: The Leaker
Hearing such a tone, Wen Jianan felt a jolt in her heart as she suddenly realized that she was simply too eager to prove herself, both in terms of her capability and the impression she made.
Yet precisely because of that intense desire to prove herself, she always came across as too aggressive and too proactive in her attitude.
Just like right now, she should not have spoken that way, nor should she have brought up wanting to clear her name.
Faced with Liang Yuxiu's question, she suddenly found herself at a loss for words.
Because she could not prove her innocence.
At least, not under the present circumstances.
Wen Jianan fell silent. "I'm sorry, I was just too impulsive. I only wanted to cooperate with you in handling this incident."
"We have a public relations firm. Furthermore, as things stand, Quantum will certainly not allow your side to participate in handling this accident any longer."
Liang Yuxiu's voice carried a calm and unruffled composure, as if Mount Tai were collapsing before him.
After a moment of thought, he intended to offer Wen Jianan a word of guidance. "Team Leader Wen, what you need to do right now is clean house, resolve the hidden dangers within your own ranks, and ferret out the person who leaked the information. As for the rest, my company's legal department will be in touch with yours."
Naturally, Wen Jianan was well aware of this. She had simply spoken out of haste just a moment ago, but now she had come to her senses.
After finishing her call with Liang Yuxiu, Wen Jianan turned back, intending to ask Wei Ming for permission to investigate the matter thoroughly. It would be best if no one had leaked anything, but if someone had, that person had to be caught.
However, the moment she walked out, she saw a crowd gathered in the office area not far away.
As Wen Jianan stepped forward, Wei Ming's voice drifted over.
"I believe everyone is quite familiar with this person, but I'll still introduce her once more. Zhang Yufei will be returning to the client relations department this time."
Wei Ming's words rang out decisively, yet the expressions on everyone's faces froze, followed by a series of confused glances exchanged among them.
Except for Chen Ling and Xiao Jiang.
The two of them had long known that Wen Jianan was about to resign, but the others did not. Consequently, everyone immediately assumed that Wei Ming had invited Zhang Yufei back to take over Wen Jianan's position. As for Wen Jianan herself, she was presumably being fired by Wei Ming because of the information leak involving Quantum.
This indirectly proved that the accusation of Wen Jianan leaking secrets was true!
A sudden uproar ensued.
"Let us welcome Yufei back!" Wei Ming announced loudly, taking the lead in applauding.
Realizing what was happening, the crowd quickly followed suit.
Manager Zhang clapped the hardest, his face beaming with smiles.
The reason was simple: Zhang Yufei was Manager Zhang's niece, the very person who had previously competed with Wen Jianan for the position of team leader and left after losing.
Surrounded in the center, Zhang Yufei wore a rare smile, nodded to those around her, and delivered some customary remarks.
"I'm very glad to be colleagues with everyone once again, and I'd like to thank President Wei for his high regard. I hope you will all take care of me in the future."
In terms of style, she was generally of the same type as Wen Jianan, but unlike Wen Jianan's gentle and intellectual demeanor, she was several degrees colder, leaning more towards an aloof boss-lady persona. If anyone dared to stare at her for too long, she would likely shoot a chilling glare that terrified them into a hasty retreat.
She also possessed a fierce sense of justice. She had always believed that Wen Jianan only managed to secure her footing at Feidu and defeat her previously to win the client-leader position by relying on Wei Ming, which was why she remained deeply resentful to this day.
Having just concluded her previous job not long ago, she had been unemployed for the past month. When Wei Ming first invited her back, she had been unwilling.
After much persuasion, she finally decided to return, determined to defeat her former rival on the original battlefield.
Naturally, everyone welcomed her warmly.
Satisfied, Zhang Yufei surveyed the surroundings, her gaze suddenly locking onto Wen Jianan, who was standing outside the crowd.
Zhang Yufei lifted her chin slightly, offering a highly provocative smile, and then walked through the crowd straight toward Wen Jianan.
"Hello, Team Leader Wen. Fancy meeting you again. We get to be colleagues once more."
Wen Jianan's gaze narrowed slightly. Instead of responding immediately, she cast a deep look at Wei Ming before turning her attention back to Zhang Yufei.
"Welcome," she uttered deeply, speaking just those two words.
Then, she looked at Wei Ming, as if about to say something.
Wei Ming immediately raised a hand to stop her. He called everyone from the former team—including those stationed in Miancheng and anyone who had ever touched the project—along with Wen Jianan and Zhang Yufei, into the conference room.
As soon as they entered, Wen Jianan immediately stated that she intended to thoroughly investigate the matter and hoped Wei Ming would give his consent.
Unexpectedly, Wei Ming actually agreed.
However, an even greater surprise was Wei Ming's additional condition: he wanted to strip Wen Jianan of her position as team leader, have Zhang Yufei take her place, and let Zhang Yufei participate in the investigation as well.
This left Wen Jianan in utter disbelief. She had always believed that Wei Ming trusted her to a certain extent; she never expected that to guard against her, he would invite Zhang Yufei back—nominally to participate, but in reality to supervise.
With her conscience clear, she had nothing to fear, but she knew all too well how hostile Zhang Yufei had been toward her in the past. Given their history, it would be a miracle if Zhang Yufei didn't trip her up; she certainly couldn't expect her help in uncovering the truth.
Before Wen Jianan could even speak, however, Zhang Yufei sprang to her feet and questioned Wei Ming in a startled tone, "President Wei, what is going on? Why should I replace Wen Jianan as the client department team leader? This is not what we agreed upon beforehand."
If things were going to be like this, Zhang Yufei saw no point in coming back at all.
She wanted to win back the position that rightfully belonged to her fair and square; receiving such an unearned handout made her feel utterly devoid of a sense of achievement.
The expression on Wei Ming's face flickered awkwardly for a moment.
He had indeed employed a bait-and-switch tactic with Zhang Yufei, deliberately withholding the information about Wen Jianan's impending resignation at the start.
Naturally, Wei Ming was not about to let her walk away now.
He pulled Zhang Yufei outside for a private chat.
Looking out from the conference room, one could see that Zhang Yufei's expression was quite displeased, while Wei Ming's posture seemed somewhat conciliatory.
Wen Jianan found the scene painfully familiar.
Years ago, when Wei Ming had invited her to join, it had been just like this.
"Jianan, will everything be alright?" Chen Ling asked nervously, deeply worried about Wen Jianan.
She knew for a fact that Wen Jianan would never do anything as heinous as leaking secrets.
Like Xiao Jiang, she believed Wen Jianan had been framed, though neither of them had any idea who the culprit was.
With the enemy lurking in the shadows while they stood in the light, that was the most spine-chilling part of it all.
In response, Wen Jianan merely pressed her lips into a thin line, shook her head, and signaled to them that everything would be fine.
Sitting opposite them, Li Ruoruo took in the entire scene and let out a silent, mocking sneer.
No one knew what exactly Wei Ming and Zhang Yufei had discussed, but when the two returned, Zhang Yufei had agreed to stay and take over Wen Jianan's position as team leader.
Furthermore, she would now participate in the investigation regarding the leak.
Wen Jianan had originally refused to be placed under surveillance, but Wei Ming made it clear that if she refused, she would have to hand over all responsibilities to Zhang Yufei immediately, face suspension, and remain barred from resigning until the investigation concluded.
Under those terms, the initiative would entirely slip out of her hands.
Unwilling to be reduced to a completely passive position—a fish on a cutting board waiting to be carved up—Wen Jianan had no choice but to agree.
Upon leaving the conference room, Wen Jianan was instructed to vacate her desk for Zhang Yufei and relocate to a corner spot.
Without saying a word, Wen Jianan quietly packed her things and moved away.
