Chapter 28: Creating a Surprise

Wei Lin had always been swift and decisive in everything he did.
After holding a brief meeting, he obtained Fenglin’s electronic design plans from Fu Jintang and handed them to An Yuntian. He then had lunch in the company cafeteria.
Afterward, he slept for half an hour, washed his face with cold water, and felt that most of the alcohol had finally left his system.
“My body’s ability to recover—and to process alcohol—has clearly improved quite a bit.”
Wei Lin silently sensed the changes taking place within him.
In the past, if he had stayed up all night drunk as he had the previous evening, he would have been listless for the entire day, his mind heavy and foggy until four or five in the afternoon.
Now it was only one o’clock, and he had already more or less recovered.
“I should be able to drive now.”
With the contract and company seal in hand, Wei Lin called for a car and headed back to the Tianhao Hotel.
He spent the entire afternoon rushing from place to place.
He personally visited three fellow hat manufacturers—Hua Mu, Zhi Jie, and Tian Zhong—one after another, finalizing orders for 160,000 units with Hua Mu, 180,000 with Zhi Jie, and 120,000 with Tian Zhong.
Adding the 140,000 units Xinlin could handle, he had successfully gathered the 600,000 units Fenglin required in a single afternoon.
He knew very well that Tang Qiang would not be easy to deal with and would certainly have more tricks up his sleeve. Therefore, he made the terms crystal clear to all three companies: the shipment had to be completed within two months.
Furthermore, he required Hua Mu, Zhi Jie, and Tian Zhong to ship their finished products directly to Xinlin every half month. Xinlin would then conduct a final unified shipment to Fenglin.
He was doing this to prevent all sorts of unexpected problems.
On the one hand, he was worried that the three companies might be unable to deliver everything at once when the two-month deadline arrived.
On the other, he was concerned that the products they delivered might have quality issues.
With shipments arriving every half month, he could arrange for Xinlin’s quality-control inspectors to examine each batch carefully and ensure that everything met Fenglin’s standards.
If anything went wrong along the way, he would also have time to remedy the situation.
“Whoosh!”
Around five in the afternoon, just as Wei Lin was about to drive away from Tian Zhong, a torrential downpour suddenly began.
Raindrops hammered against the windshield, blurring his vision. He did not hurry to leave. Instead, he picked up the phone beside him and idly scrolled through it.
He ignored the messages from his drinking buddies inviting him to dinner and drinks.
“President Wei, are you training this afternoon?”
The young coach had rarely taken the initiative to schedule a session.
“I’m busy. Not today.”
After replying, Wei Lin opened his chat with Lin Nanxi and noticed that their conversation still ended on Saturday, the day he had gone to visit his mother.
Lin Nanxi had never been a proactive woman.
Although she was constantly contributing affection points to him day and night, she had never sent him a message or called him.
“She’s my biggest source of affection points!”
He glanced at the progress bar in his mind and saw that another three points had been added, bringing the total to 15.5 out of 100. At once, he decided to go see Lin Nanxi.
…
Cathay Building, Hanlin Advertising.
“Four days.”
Lin Nanxi had also been busy all day. With the workday nearly over, she sat staring blankly at her phone.
On the screen was her WeChat conversation with Wei Lin, frozen at last Saturday.
“Is he really that busy? He hasn’t contacted me for days…”
She tapped open Wei Lin’s profile picture, which showed a starry sky, then looked at his Moments page, set to display six months of posts yet containing nothing but a single blank line. Lin Nanxi let out a quiet sigh.

Over the past four days, she had lost count of how many times she had looked at Wei Lin’s profile picture and background page.
Many times, she had wanted to send him a message and ask what he had been busy with lately, but after hesitating for a long while, she had always given up.
At work, she was bold, aggressive, and domineering. In matters of love, however, she had always been timid and passive.
“Time to go home!”
“Sister Liu, what are we eating tonight?”
“Damn it, why did it suddenly start pouring? I didn’t bring an umbrella!”
At five-thirty, the open office area filled with the relieved voices of employees finally off work. Everyone was discussing what they would do for the evening.
“Ah…”
With a sigh, Lin Nanxi stood up and tidied her desk, planning to go home and make something simple to eat.
“Manager Lin.”
Chen Hao’s ingratiating voice suddenly came from outside the office.
“It’s raining outside. Did you bring an umbrella? I have an extra one. Would you like to use it?”
“Thanks, but no.”
Lin Nanxi answered coldly, irritation rising in her heart.
She had rejected him clearly several times, yet Chen Hao acted as if he did not understand. He continued inviting her out again and again, even showing concern for her in front of their colleagues.
“Oh. All right.”
Chen Hao left disappointed.
“An umbrella… I think…”
After searching around, Lin Nanxi discovered that there really was no umbrella in her office. Her car, however, was parked in the outdoor lot.
And it was not particularly close to the entrance.
Lin Nanxi frowned slightly, but she had no intention of borrowing an umbrella from Chen Hao. After tidying up, she took the elevator downstairs.
“Whoosh!”
The rain had grown even heavier. A crowd of people without umbrellas gathered at the entrance of the building, waiting for it to stop or at least ease up.
Han Xiaolian and two other colleagues were among them, anxiously waiting for their ride-hailing car.
Normally, they would take the bus or leave on their electric scooters. The rain was simply too heavy today, so they had decided to call a car instead.
“Lin Nanxi!”
A deep, rugged male voice that haunted Lin Nanxi’s dreams suddenly rang out through the first-floor lobby of Cathay Building.
The office workers waiting for the rain to stop were instantly drawn to the voice and began searching for its source.
A tall, slender, handsome man holding an umbrella suddenly rose from a corner. With an unrestrained, radiant smile on his face, he headed straight toward Lin Nanxi.
“Another one of Lin Nanxi’s admirers.”
“Ha. He picked a decent moment, but what good will it do?”
“He’s not bad-looking! Tall and handsome—exactly my type.”
The crowd began whispering among themselves.
“Ah!”
Lin Nanxi had already been preparing to brave the rain and fetch her car. When she saw him appear without warning, the delight in her eyes and on her face was impossible to conceal.
“What are you doing here?”
“Picking you up for dinner!”
Wei Lin smiled brightly and explained, “There’s been too much going on these past few days. I only finished work at five this afternoon, and I came straight here as soon as I was done.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?” Lin Nanxi protested, both touched and annoyed.
The affection-point bar in Wei Lin’s mind shot up by five points in an instant.

Affection Points: 20.5 out of 100!
The powerful emotional impact created by such overwhelming romantic value flooded Lin Nanxi’s heart, violently driving up the progress bar in Wei Lin’s mind.
Creating surprises and catching someone off guard was one of the sharpest weapons for winning a woman’s heart.
“Those trashy books weren’t a waste of time after all!”
In an excellent mood, Wei Lin took Lin Nanxi’s hand in front of everyone and pulled her toward the entrance.
“I’ll show all you flashy bastards that Lin Nanxi is mine. She’s already taken!”
No matter how shyly Lin Nanxi tried to pull free, Wei Lin refused to let go. He dragged her along toward the entrance, and together they plunged into the downpour.
“What the hell? Who is that guy? Can he really act like this?”
“What’s wrong with Lin Nanxi today? How can she let him drag her around so roughly? Shouldn’t she have slapped him across the face?”
“I don’t understand any of this!”
The office workers who knew Lin Nanxi continued watching the two figures walking beneath a single umbrella through the torrential rain.
Several men even beat their chests and stamped their feet, as though their own wives had just run off with someone else.
…
Outdoor Parking Lot.
A Mercedes-Benz E-Class was parked beside a Lexus ES. Inside, Chen Hao did nothing but stare at Lin Nanxi’s car.
Every morning when he arrived, he deliberately searched for Lin Nanxi’s vehicle. Whenever there was an empty space beside it, he would park there, intentionally creating a chance encounter at the end of the workday.
Today was no exception.
“I want to see whether you really brought an umbrella.”
Chen Hao snorted.
A moment later, he suddenly saw Lin Nanxi walking through the rain with a man beneath a single umbrella, their hands clasped together.
Chen Hao’s eyes widened. He stared fixedly at the two of them, his expression turning frighteningly dark.
“My car is right here!” Lin Nanxi called loudly from beneath the umbrella.
“Leave it here. I’m your chauffeur today!”
Wei Lin remained unmoved. Allowing raindrops to strike his left shoulder, he pulled her onward.
“Come a little closer. Don’t get rained on!”
“Oh.”
Lin Nanxi looked helpless, but she still pressed herself tightly against him.
Chen Hao saw the entire scene clearly from inside his Mercedes. He nearly threw open the door and shouted Lin Nanxi’s name, wanting to drag her into his own car.
But Lin Nanxi did not even glance at his vehicle.
Ding!
A WeChat notification sounded.
“Manager Chen, a man came to pick up Manager Lin at the entrance! He even grabbed her hand, and she didn’t pull away!” Han Xiaolian messaged.
Chen Hao glanced at the message, and his expression grew even uglier.
