Chapter 6: Sympathy Is Unnecessary

Shen Qingqing was injured on the train. When he pulled her like that, it tugged at her wound, and she instinctively tried to pull her hand back. Jiang Zhixun thought Shen Qingqing was sulking with him, so he gripped her hand even tighter. He quickly strode out of the cafeteria. Left standing there, Lin Fengmian finally came to her senses; her eyes reddened, as if deeply wronged. Still unable to believe it, she murmured, “Brother Jiang, how could he just get married like that?” Not wanting to become the subject of ridicule, Lin Zhidong grabbed his lunchbox and headed home with his sister. “Even if he wasn’t married, there’s no chance between you two.” “How is that impossible? He ignores other women, but he talks to me. The last time he came home, he ate the food I cooked and even bought me malted milk!” Lin Zhidong’s mouth twitched. “He talks to you because of your brother’s face. Eating your cooking? He was a guest with no other choice. And that malted milk? Old Jiang didn’t buy it just for you. Don’t babble nonsense and cause misunderstandings.” Lin Fengmian was already upset that the man she liked had a wife. She hadn’t expected her own brother to scold her as well. Suddenly, she burst into tears. “I like Brother Jiang! Shen, if you don’t belong here, then just go back where you came from. Don’t be an eyesore in front of us!” Lin Zhidong was startled by his sister’s words. He sternly reprimanded her, “They’re a married couple. Whether they stay or leave is their business. Don’t meddle, and don’t ever say things like that again. And don’t keep having feelings for Old Jiang.” Before, he had just assumed Old Jiang was single, but now knowing he had a wife, she still wanted to like him? That was unacceptable! Lin Fengmian sobbed, “But… Brother Jiang never mentioned Shen at all. That means he doesn’t like her. He’s not young anymore; maybe he was forced by his family to marry her.” “That’s none of your business.” Lin Zhidong’s expression grew even sterner. “Some mistakes you can’t afford to make, or it’ll ruin your whole life!” “Then what am I supposed to do?” Lin Fengmian’s sorrow deepened. “I really like Brother Jiang.” Lin Zhidong knew his sister’s stubbornness was like that of an ox. He said bluntly, “Old Jiang never talked about Shen, but he’s clearly rejected you. If you keep causing trouble, then that’s on you.” “Shen came all the way from Jing City. She must have suffered so much. You didn’t even understand the situation and made things difficult for her in the cafeteria. Next time you meet, apologize to her.” “Are you even my real brother? You’re so twisted and unfair!” Lin Fengmian glared at Lin Zhidong, her eyes full of accusation. Lin Zhidong felt wronged. “If I weren’t your brother, would I still bother to advise you?” When it came to principles, Lin Zhidong couldn’t be lenient. He had only one sister, and if she caused a big mess, her life would be ruined. Clearing his throat, he said, “If you can’t let go, then go back to the countryside first. When you’ve come to your senses, we’ll help find you a suitable guy.” Upon hearing this, Lin Fengmian’s tears dried up.

Their hometown was in the countryside, with harsh conditions. How could it be as easy as raising a child in the staff quarters? Wiping her tears, she asked irritably, “If I leave, who will look after the baby?” Lin Zhidong thought seriously for a moment. “We’ll hire a nanny in the staff quarters to help for a few years.” “That’s a waste of money!” “We can’t just take advantage of others.” Lin Zhidong thought this was a great solution compared to letting his sister cause a huge problem. “Don’t even think about it. I’m not going back to the countryside!” … Meanwhile, Jiang Zhixun took Shen Qingqing to a secluded place. As soon as he released her hand, Shen Qingqing instinctively covered her arm. The pain made her right hand stiff. Her delicate brows furrowed slightly, and a flicker of pain passed through her eyes. Jiang Zhixun’s deep eyes narrowed. He took a step closer to her. “What’s wrong with your hand?” “It’s nothing.” Perhaps because they had been apart too long, or because she had decided to give up on this marriage, Shen Qingqing began to resist Jiang Zhixun’s closeness. Seeing her take a step back, Jiang Zhixun’s jaw tightened even more. “Shen Qingqing, this is not the time to be sulking.” Shen Qingqing laughed bitterly at his words. “Is it that everything I do looks like I’m sulking to you?” Every decision she made was rational. The only time she lost her head was when she married him under the elders’ matchmaking, knowing full well he didn’t like her. Three years had passed, and she already regretted it. Every time she received his remittance, besides regret, she felt guilty. Being bound to someone who didn’t love her must be suffocating, right? Since neither of them was happy, it was better to part ways sooner rather than later! Looking straight into Jiang Zhixun’s eyes, Shen Qingqing spoke slowly and clearly, “I won’t sulk with you anymore. Once the paperwork is done, I won’t ever see you again in this life.” In Jiang Zhixun’s memory, Shen Qingqing had always been a well-behaved and obedient girl. This was the first time she looked at him with such cold eyes and spoke with such frosty tone. Jiang Zhixun felt strangely uneasy and somewhat flustered. But he didn’t think too deeply, assuming that she meant she would soon return to Jing City, and they would live apart again, never meeting. His hand, hanging at his side, rubbed itself slightly. Finally, he asked dryly, “Did you get hurt? Let me see.”

Saying this, he used his body to shield her from the cold wind and reached to loosen Shen Qingqing’s scarf and coat. Shen Qingqing turned her body sideways. “None of your business.” The man’s distinctly knuckled hand froze. The expression that had just softened hardened again. “Fine, you won’t let me see.” Before Shen Qingqing could respond, he grabbed her left hand. “Then let’s go to the hospital and have the doctor check it.” Shen Qingqing’s limbs were slender. Even though she wore a coat, one of the man’s hands could tightly clamp her forearm. His strength was considerable, and no matter how much she struggled, she couldn’t pull free. Being dragged forward, Shen Qingqing’s pretty face flushed with anger. He had just wanted to keep his distance from her, yet now he was holding her tight. “Jiang Zhixun, are you crazy?” The man glanced back at her coldly. “Even if you don’t want to go back to Jing City, there’s no need to torture your body.” Shen Qingqing’s expression grew even uglier. “Do you think I’m doing this on purpose?” Jiang Zhixun sneered, “I never said that. Don’t put words in my mouth and then cry blaming me.” Shen Qingqing didn’t know what was wrong with herself. Since seeing Jiang Zhixun, she felt deeply aggrieved. She wasn’t the type to cry easily, but now, just a slight change in his tone made her unable to hold back tears. She wanted to tell Jiang Zhixun that she was ill. Her memory would worsen and she might forget him one day. Their remaining time together was only a few short days. After getting the divorce certificate, they would have nothing to do with each other. Just a few days—couldn’t they at least get along peacefully? The words were on the tip of her tongue, but she swallowed them back. She didn’t want Jiang Zhixun’s pity. Knowing his character, if he found out she was sick, he might refuse the divorce. That wasn’t the outcome she wanted. Her chest felt like it was stuffed with cotton, spreading a suffocating pressure to her throat. Shen Qingqing felt extremely uncomfortable. She wanted to distance herself from Jiang Zhixun to calm down. Sensing that Shen Qingqing was still struggling, Jiang Zhixun warned coldly, “If you don’t behave, I’ll send you to the train station right now.”
