Chapter 28: I Am the One Who Killed Him!

At the set of *Detective Ke Lan*, Ji Yu arrived alongside Jiang Qingqing, laughing and chatting together.
Jiang Qingqing was even chasing him around and playfully hitting him, leaving the assembled staff utterly astonished.
How did you two arrive together?
And why are you so intimate?
Li Yapeng was equally surprised. He had not expected their relationship to progress so quickly.
Hadn’t they only gone out for a meal? How did it feel as though Ji Yu had already succeeded?
The Sugar Man really never keeps idle people around!
Li Yapeng was surprised, but with rumors about the two of them spreading, the pressure on him had indeed eased considerably.
The production had also gained much more exposure. It was a win-win situation.
The only problem was that Ji Yu had stolen his limelight, which left him feeling somewhat uncomfortable.
Still, this had all been arranged by Old Cai, so there was little he could say.
In the dressing room, Ji Yu quickly finished his makeup. Mostly, it consisted of concealer and eyebrow work.
His natural features were good enough that he did not need anything too elaborate.
Once his makeup was done, Ji Yu went to find the director.
The production had been divided into two units, and it had not yet been decided which unit would handle his scenes that day.
For a television series of more than thirty episodes, filming with two units would greatly speed up the schedule.
The Hong Kong team was even more efficient than their mainland counterparts. Ji Yu estimated that he would wrap in another half a month.
Finishing an entire series in just over a month was truly impressive efficiency.
After speaking with the director for a while, Ji Yu was assigned to Unit B.
Unit B had no scenes with the male or female leads. Even the second female lead was absent, leaving Ji Yu terribly bored.
Over in Unit A, everyone was busy falling in love. The male lead dated the female lead, then the second female lead, and finally the third female lead.
What a life that character had—falling in love while solving crimes. He was practically having the time of his life.
Ji Yu, on the other hand, had it rough. Either he went out committing crimes under cover of night, or he spent the day investigating himself as the mastermind behind everything.
Now this was what you called *Infernal Affairs*!
The set was dreadfully dull. Many of the staff had come from Hong Kong, and Ji Yu could barely understand what they were saying.
At lunchtime, while Ji Yu was wolfing down his boxed meal, Old Cai arrived with a reporter.
“Ji Yu, stop eating. A reporter’s here to visit the set and would like to interview you.”
“Coming!”
Ji Yu set his meal aside and hurried over.
He had to seize every opportunity to appear on camera.
The reporter was very professional. After exchanging greetings, he immediately began the interview.
“I hear that the psychopathic killer you play has scared several actors to tears. People are joking that you aren’t even acting.”
“Er… Ask me something else.”
“Then what is your relationship with Jiang Qingqing? According to the owner of the video rental shop, yesterday you took her to see *Sex and Zen*…”
“I admit it! I’m a psychopathic killer!”
Ji Yu was completely numb with embarrassment. Were paparazzi really this devious? They had even gone to question the video shop owner!
By the end of the interview, the reporter had badgered Ji Yu into submission.
Whenever Ji Yu refused to cooperate, the reporter brought up *Sex and Zen*.
After the reporter left, Ji Yu stared hopelessly up at the sky.
How humiliating. As the king of spies in the entertainment industry, he had actually made such a blunder.

Tonight, he was going to steal every disc from that video rental shop!
Jiang Qingqing came over and asked curiously, “What did the reporter ask you? You seemed awfully nervous.”
“Nothing!”
Ji Yu denied it outright.
Suppressing a laugh, Jiang Qingqing tilted her head back and said, “I remember watching *In the Mood for Love* yesterday, but why did the reporter say you also rented *Sex and Zen*… Mmph!”
Ji Yu clapped a hand over her mouth and pleaded softly, “Don’t say it! Otherwise, I’ll tell everyone we watched it together!”
Jiang Qingqing bit him, then reached out and pinched the soft flesh at his waist.
“Let go.”
Only then did Ji Yu release her. He muttered, “The owner said it was buy one, get one free. How was I supposed to know it was that kind of movie?”
“Keep pretending. Go on, keep pretending!”
“All right, all right. I’ll watch it with you next time, okay?”
“I wouldn’t watch it! Shameless pervert!”
While the two of them were bickering and fooling around, Old Cai came over and grabbed Ji Yu as well.
“You. Come here.”
She dragged him into a corner before lowering her voice and scolding him.
“What were you thinking, renting an adult film? Do you know how much money I had to give that reporter to settle this?”
“Sis, I was wrong. I thought it was a respectable movie.”
“Do you think I believe that?”
Ji Yu simply gave up trying to defend himself. “I was just curious. By the way, could you help me get the first two *Sex and Zen* movies through your Hong Kong connections?”
“You’re making demands now?” Old Cai twisted his ear. “Do you really want to become a perverted sex fiend?”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Sis, don’t twist my ear. It’s humiliating!”
“Now you care about your dignity?”
Old Cai lectured him for a while longer before leaving.
In the end, she came back once more and whispered, “If you want to watch something next time, I’ll bring it to you. Don’t rent anything again!”
Ji Yu: “…”
She was actually going to bring them to him? In that case, he might as well place an order!
He wanted films starring Li Lizhen and Yvonne Hung too!
Preferably signed glamour photo books as well!
Old Cai agreed to help him get a copy, then repeated her warnings several times before finally leaving.
Ji Yu liked this boss. Whenever something happened, she really stepped up.
Of course, that was only if she liked you in the first place.
With such a wonderful boss, Ji Yu had to keep doing his part and maintain his public image.
Over the next dozen days, Ji Yu filmed diligently every day, portraying the psychopathic villain with remarkable depth and precision.
Apart from filming, he occasionally went out with Jiang Qingqing to keep the rumors alive.
Time flew. Before he knew it, the day of Ji Yu’s wrap had arrived.
In the story, his character was going to die that day.
Detective Ke Lan had uncovered his identity as the mastermind. Abandoned by everyone, he would ultimately take his own life.
Li Yapeng, dressed in a trench coat and looking suave, shouted at Ji Yu, who had been driven into a desperate corner.
“Surrender! Don’t keep going down the wrong path! Submit to the judgment of the law!”
Ji Yu pointed a gun at him and roared, “Ke Lan! Who do you think you are? No one in this world can judge me—not even Heaven itself!”
Bang!
The great villain, Tiansong, shot himself in the mouth.
Ji Yu collapsed onto the ground and stared up at the ceiling, a wave of relief washing over him.

That final line had felt incredibly satisfying to shout.
“Cut! Congratulations, Ji Yu, you’ve officially wrapped!”
The director rose and applauded. He said nothing about Ji Yu’s last-minute alteration to the dialogue.
In fact, he thought the line was excellent.
It highlighted the character’s wickedness, ambition, and unwillingness to accept defeat.
If he had truly repented at the end, the villain would have become a laughingstock.
That kid Ji Yu had really created a classic villain.
He had spent the entire series matching wits with Detective Ke Lan.
If not for the sake of due process, Ke Lan might not even have won in the end!
Once the series aired, it was impossible to say whether the character of Ke Lan would become popular, but Tiansong was certain to be a hit.
There were very few villains this compelling in domestic television and film.
Everyone on set applauded, including the screenwriter.
Ji Yu had designed many memorable moments for the character of Tiansong, and the screenwriter was now genuinely impressed.
Ji Yu sprang up from the ground and wiped the fake blood from the corner of his mouth.
He could not help smacking his lips.
It was rather sweet.
First bitter, then sweet. At long last, he had wrapped. Now all he had to do was wait for the series to air and become a sensation.
Would people keep casting him as villains in the future?
Chen Qingquan had once said, “You’ve got to learn foreign languages. I want to learn one too.”
That actor had spent his entire career playing bad guys.
And every one of them was a pervert who toyed with women.
When you thought about it, there was a certain appeal to that.
But if one was talking about truly having fun, Teacher Xu Jinyang was still the best.
No, that was not quite right. The ones having the most fun were Japanese male actors!
They really went all the way!
At that moment, Ji Yu carried the bouquet presented by the production team back to the dressing room.
He had wrapped. Now he could go find Teacher Li.
He missed her.
Just after Ji Yu finished removing his makeup with a cleansing pad, Jiang Qingqing arrived.
She glanced at him, then picked up another cleansing pad. Holding his chin, she said, “Don’t move. You haven’t cleaned off all your eyebrow makeup.”
Ji Yu froze.
Were the two of them getting a little too intimate?
Jiang Qingqing looked into his eyes and said, “Let’s have dinner together tonight to celebrate your wrap.”
“I have to go to Hengdian tonight.”
“Can’t you go tomorrow?”
“It’s not impossible…”
“Then it’s settled. Wait for me in the parking lot.”
“…”
