Chapter 11: The Story of Zhen Huan - Summer, Winter, Spring (Part 10)

Miss Zhen’s reputation had been publicly stripped away; even if you didn’t fully believe it, you’d at least harbor some suspicion. She had declared her intent to marry the finest man under heaven, and yet you still tried to comfort her. Comfort her, indeed—her target was clear from the start: the man she would marry in the future. She even thought of casting you aside, for her heart sought but one true person.
After venting, Madam Xia arrived.
“Greetings, Princess.”
Xia Dongchun bounded over in two or three leaps. “Mother, you’re here! Did you bring something delicious for your daughter?”
Madam Xia had long since given up on her daughter’s propriety—she could do things, but never quite right.
Well, as long as they didn’t offend the two great powers, those ladies could protect her.
Madam Xia sat her daughter onto the couch, shaking her head at her lack of ambition. Someone brought over a dish.
“This is a crystal bun personally made by your grandmother. Eat up.” She watched her daughter eat, occasionally wiping her mouth.
“Mother, once I enter the palace, will I not be able to see you often?”
At this thought, Xia Dongchun suddenly felt the bun in her hand lose its appeal. Her dependence on her mother was strong.
Seeing her daughter like this, Madam Xia’s heart ached. “No, dear. I have the pass left behind by Emperor Kangxi himself. I don’t even need to present it to enter the palace.”
“If you want to see me, I will come to you.”
Back then, the noble consort had been gravely ill and begged Kangxi. Usually, imperial relatives had to present their passes upon entering the palace, especially the crown princess. But because her status was special—being the noble consort’s sister and raised as a daughter—Kangxi relented. This was an honor reserved only for legitimate princesses.
Hearing this, Xia Dongchun felt reassured and eagerly resumed eating.
Once her mother accompanied her to finish eating and lulled her to sleep, she returned to the guest chamber. “Fanghuai, you shall change your name from now on, and be called by your original name—Ye Yun.”
Ye Yun? Could they really find that out?
She had changed her name after her mother’s death. It seemed they had traced back eighteen generations. This wasn’t merely a name change—it was a blatant warning.
Still, she was sensible enough to agree. “Yes.”
Madam Xia nodded. “One year. I only ask for one year to have you protect my daughter well. After one year, I will set you free, and promise you this: When you followed the Wuyar family, it wasn’t solely to repay a favor, was it?”
Ye Yun was speechless. “You know all this?”
“Yes.”
“I offer a path to your grandson, whether in civil or military affairs.”
At this, Ye Yun’s eyes lit up. This was excellent. It wasn’t that she refused the court—she simply couldn’t enter it. Especially people like them—not nobles, not aristocrats, and certainly not gentry—no matter how famous they were in the martial world, they were still outsiders.
Changing one’s identity was hard; making a complete transformation and going far was even harder.
Not much better than merchants.
Now, however, this was a ladder to the heavens.
She immediately knelt with utmost loyalty. “I swear to protect the young mistress to the death. Not just one year—my whole life.”
Madam Xia smiled faintly. “You needn’t pledge your life. After one year, you are free. If you want to stay by Nuonuo’s side, that’s fine; if you want to leave, that’s fine too.”
“But as long as you stay by her side, devote your heart and soul to her.”
Don’t be fooled by Nuonuo’s carefree demeanor—she was deeply loyal. No one by her side ever suffered or was bullied.
“Yes, your servant obeys.”
Next, she motioned for Paomo to hand her a file. “You should already know the palace situation. These are the newcomers’ profiles.”
She paused, then said, “Today, I came to ask about that Zhen Huan.”
Ye Yun flipped through the papers and quickly understood what her mistress sought. “Empress Chun Yuan’s love for the emperor was false from the start… but she truly fell in love later, only the emperor never reciprocated. That’s why Empress Chun Yuan made her decision… and then came the current empress.”
“So, don’t even compare the resemblance. Even if she were the original, resurrected, it wouldn’t help.”
She continued reading. Goodness, she’d started learning the dances at age three, every gesture and word modeled after her. Truly nauseating.
The illegitimate daughter posing as a maid.
Flipping further, the daughter of the disgraced minister was none other than the younger sister of Noble Consort Shu.
Oh my, the Zhen family was really something.
“That’s good. Keep this file. The young mistress doesn’t have a filter; having a venting outlet is good. It’s better than offending someone the moment she enters the palace.”
Though fearless, she was troublesome. Madam Xia knew her daughter would offend everyone without a leader.
“If the young mistress encounters someone formidable, give her some intel from this file.”
Ye Yun was straightforward. Well, they’d found a woolly sheep to shear. Once it was done, this one would be finished. By then, her young mistress would have a foothold in the palace; no one would dare challenge her.
“The young mistress cannot suffer any grievance. You three must remember—if she takes offense, retaliate. Those in power may not start trouble, but they don’t fear it either. If they don’t accept it, fight back. I have a life-saving talisman.”
The three exchanged glances in silence, then nodded.
“Yes.”
Madam Xia checked on Ruan Nuo before leaving.
The three left behind looked at each other, then straightened their backs. They had connections; they must hold their ground. The young mistress’s reputation could not be tarnished.
Meanwhile, the Zhen Huan, whose future was casually decided upon by these three, lay asleep, planning to continue chatting with her close friends and listening to Aunt Fangruo’s gossip the next day.
That same night, this leaked news reached Xia Dongchun’s ears, making her so furious she threw her cup.
“That shameless woman! Calling her pretentious is polite enough. If I, this lady, must serve with my beauty in the palace, I will flay her alive!”
Her fury silenced Paomo from continuing. “Take it slow; there’s more to come. If you get hurt, the madam will skin you alive.”
Eventually, the three calmed her down.

On September 10, under the witness of her entire household, Xia Dongchun was escorted into the palace by two investiture envoys.
After everything was done and they returned to Zhaohua Palace, Xia Dongchun was utterly unwell. After washing up, she lay stubbornly on the bed, unresponsive to anyone.
At night, when Xuanling arrived, he found the young lady sprawled out on the bed in a starfish position.
He couldn’t help but laugh.
Waving everyone out, he approached and noticed suspicious moisture at the corner of her mouth.
Well, it was only the first night; holding her to sleep was the same anyway.
During the day, the ladies of the harem were all deeply struck by this Noble Consort’s beauty, now quietly recuperating in their respective chambers.
In Jingren Palace, the Empress sat upright while Consort Qi’s lips had broken out in blisters from anxiety.

“Your Majesty, please give your word. This lady’s background and appearance are unparalleled. If she bears a child, my Third Brother might be pushed into some corner.”
The Empress gave her a rare look. “Impressive. You’ve thought this through.”
Though reluctant, she asked, “So what do you want to do?”
Receiving a hopeful answer, Consort Qi could no longer hold back, “If she can’t bear children, then I…”
The Empress was dumbfounded by her foolishness, and Jiao Qiu widened her eyes.
Without looking at her, the Empress stood. “If you don’t want to live, then do it.”
What a joke. Outside the palace, the Niuhulu family and the princess had investigated everything thoroughly. Didn’t they see Fanghuai was already assigned as a helper inside?
She could guarantee whether it would succeed was uncertain, but she would surely be implicated. Lord Shi might even burn down her palace.
Thinking this, the Empress ordered Jiao Qiu, “Arrange people for the newcomers; study them closely. Consort Qi is no longer useful.”
Jiao Qiu knew well that Consort Qi was utterly foolish. If she failed, she’d drag down the Empress too.
“Your Majesty, what about Consort Wan?”
The Empress rejected without a second thought. “No, she offended Noble Consort Jia.”
Jiao Qiu considered and recommended, “Then Consort Shen? Or An Daying?”
The Empress frowned. “Anyone else?”
“There’s also Consort Fucha.”
“All these maids report well.”
“I heard Consort Fucha is intelligent and steady, though her family background is uncertain. But Noble Consort Jia might need such a background. Even if she can’t suppress her, she can at least hold her off.”
“And Consort Shen joined forces with Zhen Huan and An Changzai. If nurtured well, the favor can be shared.”
The Empress paused,I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
