“But he refuses to pay the bill!”

“We can only ask him to leave. We hope you can understand, Miss.”

“And please persuade this gentleman to cooperate and pay the bill.”

The waiter held his head high as he spoke.

“What’s wrong with being a former convict?”

“Besides, do you have any proof?”

“Don’t tell me people have to reveal their identities before they’re allowed to dine here!”

After hearing his explanation, Ye Bing found the whole thing even more ridiculous. A person’s criminal record was not written across his face. If he had not disturbed anyone, why should he be treated this way?

Faced with Ye Bing’s questions, the waiter fell silent for a moment before saying, “If none of the guests here objects, we can let it go.”

“Oh, is that so?”

“Let me see who’s acting so high and mighty, as though they’re superior to everyone else!”

“What’s wrong with being a former convict? Whom exactly has he affected? Did he spend any of your money? Even the authorities of the Nine Provinces are willing to give people a second chance. Who do you think you are to look down on others here?”

Ye Bing’s temper flared on the spot. She exploded in anger.

“Miss, that isn’t quite right,” another diner said. “We are people of status, and naturally, we frequent high-end establishments!”

“No one wants to associate with a former convict, do they?”

“If this restaurant welcomes former convicts, beggars, and every stray cat and dog, then I’d feel that the money I spent here was wasted!”

“I’m a department manager at Monarchs Under Heaven Corporation. I came here and paid a premium precisely to enjoy life!”

“Now even a former convict can dine in the same restaurant as us. Where is the high-end atmosphere this place boasts of?”

“You may have no taste yourself, but you don’t get to speak for the rest of us!”

At that moment, Chen Huilan suddenly rose to her feet and spoke with an air of arrogance.

Ye Bing’s voice was cold.

“Seen me? Who do you think you are?” Chen Huilan retorted. “You consort with a former convict, so I doubt you’re a good person either!”

“And you’re right about one thing. If I have the ability, naturally I should move to a stronger company. The capable deserve the best positions!”

Chen Huilan answered with an arrogant, self-satisfied tone.

At that moment, Su Ming suddenly became interested as well. He had never expected Chen Huilan to be so unlucky as to walk straight into trouble.

She would never have imagined that the woman standing before her was Ye Bing, the chief sales officer and executive director of Monarchs Under Heaven Corporation’s headquarters.

“So a branch-office manager like you already considers herself superior to everyone else?”

“In that case, as the executive director of the headquarters, should I be worshipped by all?”

Ye Bing’s voice suddenly turned icy.

In an instant, everyone nearby froze when they heard her claim to be the executive director of Monarchs Under Heaven Corporation’s headquarters. An uproar broke out around them.

In Dragon Prefecture, the Lin Group and Monarchs Under Heaven were leading corporations. Countless companies had to watch their expressions and depend on them for a living.

And this woman was actually an executive director of Monarchs Under Heaven?

“Hah! You don’t even bother preparing your lies!” Chen Huilan burst out laughing. “You? The executive director of the headquarters?”

“Are you Lin Ruoxue?”

“The media reports on President Lin Ruoxue all the time. Her photographs are everywhere. If you want to impersonate someone, you should at least choose the other mysterious executive director—Ye Bing. This is hilarious!”

Chen Huilan had initially been stunned, and even felt a trace of unease. But after thinking it over, she realized that Lin Ruoxue and the woman before her looked nothing alike.

It was obvious that the other woman was merely pretending to be important.

“Very well.”

Ye Bing suddenly raised her hands and clapped twice. Then she took out her phone and made a call.

“Manager Liu Gang of the branch office? This is Ye Bing.”

“By the way, what’s your name?” Ye Bing suddenly asked while on the phone.

The smile on Chen Huilan’s face froze when she heard Ye Bing mention Manager Liu Gang.

How could this woman know Manager Liu’s name?

He was her direct superior. And this woman had called herself Ye Bing!

Chen Huilan stood there in a daze.

Su Ming, however, was perfectly clearheaded.

“Her name is Chen Huilan,” he added with a smile, twisting the knife.

Ye Bing glared at him. Her expression seemed to say, How can even a simple meal turn into this much trouble?

Then she repeated the name into the phone.

“President Ye, there is indeed a department manager named Chen Huilan. What happened?”

Liu Gang’s voice came through the phone.

“Good. I just heard her say that she is extremely capable, that the company is wasting her talents, and that she wants to change jobs.”

“So do this: terminate her employment. There’s no need for her to come back and suffer any longer.”

Ye Bing spoke with decisive calm.

“Yes, President!”

“I’ll call her right away and inform her!”

Liu Gang nearly exploded with rage when he heard that.

He had always had a good relationship with Chen Huilan, and she was about to be promoted to general manager of the department. Yet this woman had dared to make such a reckless declaration.

Most importantly, she had been unbelievably unlucky—she had actually crossed paths with President Ye.

“No need. She’s standing right in front of me. You can tell her yourself.”

With a mocking smile, Ye Bing pressed the speakerphone button.

“Chen Huilan, write your resignation letter tomorrow. Otherwise, you can forget about collecting next month’s salary!”

As soon as Liu Gang finished speaking, Ye Bing ended the call and slipped her phone back into her handbag.

Chen Huilan was already dumbfounded. Her mind had gone completely blank, as though it had been struck by a bolt of lightning.

Her legs gave way, and she collapsed into her chair. The light vanished from her eyes.

“No… No, that’s impossible!”

“It took me so much effort to climb to where I am today…”

Chen Huilan was utterly numb. For a long time, she could not come back to her senses, completely overwhelmed by Liu Gang’s order.
