Chapter 6: I Suggest You Keep Your Voice Down!
“Nonsense! Utter nonsense!”
The old man still tried to struggle.
He looked as if he had suffered a grave injustice, sitting on the ground with tears wiped away by his sleeve.
“We raised you from infancy with our own blood and sweat, and this is how you treat your own parents? Heaven must be blind! You heartless beast!”
Mrs. Zhang sat on the ground, wiping her tears, pointing at Bai Xiuming, crying bitterly.
The couple’s loud cries drew the nearby onlookers back, who then whispered and pointed at the old man’s doorstep.
Bai Ruyu glanced at the crowd and at Bai Xiuming, who looked bewildered by the situation. She knew her father still found it hard to believe and felt some sympathy seeing the old couple’s pitiful tears.
“You two aren’t my real grandparents! They are watching you from the underworld right now!”
Bai Ruyu asked her father to let her down, speaking clearly with bright eyes, unlike before when her gaze was either clouded or bloodshot with dilated pupils.
“Sister Yu, you… you?”
Mrs. Jiang stood beside Bai Xiuming. Seeing her daughter come down and speak so fluently, she glanced sideways and noticed the clear light in her eyes.
She held the little girl in disbelief and excitement.
“Mother, I’m fine.”
Bai Ruyu gave Mrs. Jiang a reassuring smile.
Seeing tears well up in Mrs. Jiang’s eyes and her lips tightly pressed as she nodded fervently, Bai Ruyu turned her gaze to the two stunned people sitting on the ground.
The current situation was not suitable for detailed explanations; there would be time for that later. For now, they needed to deal with these people.
“Mrs. Zhang, don’t you find it strange? How come after that stone fell, I’m still alive? Why haven’t I died yet?”
Mrs. Zhang on the ground averted her eyes nervously. “I-I don’t know. I didn’t throw any stones at you. You’re talking nonsense!”
Seeing her denial, Bai Ruyu sneered. “Hmph! You don’t know? Well, since everyone’s here, I might as well be straightforward. I died just now when you refused to pay and argued. I was taken away by the underworld’s guardians!”
Bai Ruyu’s words were beyond belief. The crowd’s pupils dilated in shock, and an eerie silence fell, broken only by labored breathing.
“You—are you crazy again? Spouting nonsense here! Bai Xiuming! Take this little brat home at once!”
Bai Dalang suddenly felt a chill in his heart, sensing that if this mad girl kept talking, trouble would come.
“Don’t rush! Of course, I’ll go home. But I haven’t finished speaking yet. Guess who I met in the underworld?”
Bai Ruyu laughed softly, looking mysteriously at everyone.
There was no denying she looked quite mad...
“Who… who?”
A middle-aged woman swallowed nervously, clutching her chest, whispering.
Though afraid, curiosity got the better of her.
Bai Ruyu, encouraged by her interest, stepped closer and smiled broadly. “Yes, who was it?”
Seeing the tension among the crowd, Bai Ruyu continued.
“Of course, my real grandfather Bai Qingfeng! And my real grandmother, Mrs. Zhang! They saw their son treated like a beast of burden, crying day and night below, unwilling to reincarnate, just waiting there!”
The words reached the ears of the three standing at the door. The old couple on the ground turned pale, trembling uncontrollably.
Bai Dalang, barely standing, staggered, his legs shaking and teeth chattering.
“No! You’re just crazy! Foolish! Pretending to be a spirit! Utter nonsense!”
Mrs. Zhang shook her head repeatedly, her eyes bloodshot as she glared at Bai Ruyu, cursing the wretched girl.
Unfazed by the venomous look, Bai Ruyu warned, “Shh! I advise you to keep your voice down. Disrespecting spirits can bring misfortune!”
Pausing, as if struck by a great realization, she exclaimed, “Oh yes! The King of Hell, considering the good deeds my grandparents did while alive, not only overlooked their failure to reincarnate but even appointed them as underworld officials!”
She turned to the stunned village chief Bai, her back to him. “Village Chief, see? My grandparents not only sent me back and helped me regain clarity, but my headache is gone too.”
Bai Village Chief snapped back to reality and looked at the girl, who pushed back the hair at the nape of her neck. The normally gruesome wound was now healed and scarred!
Such a large scar implied a terrible injury before.
How could it have healed in a single day?
Not even the imperial physicians could manage such a miracle!
“Sister Yu, did your grandfather and grandmother say anything else?”
Village Chief Bai now fully believed Bai Ruyu’s words. A wave of guilt welled up inside him, and he covered his face, ashamed to face the spirit of Bai Qingfeng and his wife.
“Village Chief, my grandparents only hate themselves for trusting the wrong people, causing their children and descendants to suffer.”
Bai Ruyu spoke casually, but anyone would hate to see their children and descendants mistreated like this.
They probably would have overturned their coffins by now, desperate to rise from the grave and punish the Bai family!
“Father, my grandparents said they feel sorry for you, but how to proceed is up to you.”
Bai Ruyu looked at Bai Xiuming, whose face was already drenched in tears, giving him the power to choose. There was one thing she didn’t say.
Firstly, she feared he couldn’t bear it. Secondly, decades had passed, and all evidence was likely lost.
“Uncle Village Chief, please gather the clan and sever ties with the Bai family. Return to me all that my parents left behind!”
Bai Xiuming looked up tearfully at the sky, took a deep breath, and when he looked at the Bai family again, there was no warmth in his eyes.
If these people didn’t regard him as their own child, why hadn’t they told him the truth?
Where were his biological parents’ remains?
He did not know!
Where was his biological parents’ grave?
He did not know either!!!
For over thirty years, he hadn’t visited them once, nor burned incense or joss paper for them.
He had been unfilial!
He was utterly unworthy of being a son!
“What? Sever ties? We raised you all these years, and this is how you treat us? You want us to return what’s ours to you?” Mrs. Zhang’s eyes were filled with venom.
She had schemed hard to gain those possessions.
She’d rather die than give them back!
“Raise me? Ha! At four years old, I had to climb mountains to gather pig grass; at five, cook for the family; at six, work the fields... When I grew up, the money I earned was all taken by you! You say you raised me?”
Bai Xiuming suddenly seemed a different man, almost deranged. “Hahaha! You raised me? What a joke!”
He laughed until tears streamed down his face, dripping onto the ground as he pounded the earth frantically.
“You treated me like swine! You forbade me from filial piety! You even harmed my child! And you dare to say you raised me?”
The old Bai couple were left speechless, their eyes uneasy.
“So what? Don’t forget, if it weren’t for your parents raising you until you were three, you’d be nothing but a pile of bones now!”
Bai Dalang’s eyes darkened with resentment. He thought his parents should never have had even a shred of mercy.
Then none of this would have happened!
