Chapter 110: Curtain Call, Sealing the Passage to the Reverse World
With that single blow, Lin Xiao went weak in the limbs and drained of strength, nearly toppling to the ground.
A soft hand reached out and steadied his arm. He turned his head and found a smiling face before him, bright with charm and warmth. It was Zoe.
“Your strength has grown again, Mr. Jonathan,” Zoe said with a smile.
Lin Xiao forced himself upright, one hand resting on the Star-Annihilating Battle Axe as he held himself steady.
“Welcome back, Miss Zoe. You look well, too.”
There was a flood of words crowding his throat, yet what came out was only a simple exchange of pleasantries. Lin Xiao secretly wondered whether he ought to put on the title that could bend the story in his favor and boost his charm a little.
After thinking it over, he still chose not to wear it. He did not want to rely on outside help to alter Zoe’s impression of him.
“Zoe, is this the Mr. Jonathan you mentioned?” asked a beautiful woman with blond hair and blue eyes, slim and graceful, as she walked over with light steps. She gave a soft laugh. “That attack just now was incredibly powerful. It was almost the strongest holy light magic I’ve ever seen. Are you a descendant of the Knights Templar?”
“And this is?” Lin Xiao looked up to study her. She was beautiful as well, around her thirties, no less lovely than Zoe, though more mature and intelligent in bearing.
“Hello, Mr. Jonathan. I am Misty Dale, senior councilor of the Witch Coven, the Swamp Witch. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise, Miss Dale. And thank you for helping to stop the Mind Flayer just now.”
Lin Xiao returned the greeting. A crowd gathered around them, watching the two witches. Eleven stepped forward, took Zoe’s arm, and quietly asked about her experiences.
“It was nothing, and I didn’t do much anyway. It was all Zoe’s doing. You should be thanking her, really,” Misty said with a wink, giving Zoe a meaningful glance. She had clearly noticed the subtle tension between the two.
After a few moments of small talk, Lin Xiao remembered the matter of the otherworldly passage and decided to head there at once. He would have Eleven close it completely. Now that Zoe and Misty had arrived, perhaps they could lend a hand as well.
He stated his intention, and Nick and the others had no objections. Misty also nodded.
“Yes. Zoe asked me to come not only to teach your younger sister, but also to help close the otherworld passage. The meaning of our coven’s supreme witches is the same: seal the passage as soon as possible, so no more monsters are drawn in to threaten our world.”
So that was it. Zoe had likely gone back to report on the situation, and not merely because of Eleven’s matter.
“Then let’s not waste time. We’ll head to Hawkins Lab at once.”
Nick, Eddie, Lucas, Dustin, and Eric, you five stay here and lead the werewolves in continuing the search for the demodogs. Take care of their bodies as well.”
Lin Xiao quickly made the arrangements. There were so many demodog corpses, along with the Mind Flayer’s massive true body, all of which had to be dealt with properly. And if any stragglers had slipped through the net, they could not be allowed to escape either.
None of them objected. Nick and Eddie were both detectives, after all, so it was more convenient for them to handle the cleanup.
They found several cars and drove to the laboratory, arriving outside soon after.
The place had become a hell on earth. Corpses of demodogs, soldiers, and staff lay scattered everywhere, and blood had stained the ground red.
Eleven, Zoe, and Misty rose into the air and floated slowly toward the laboratory. Lin Xiao followed with quick, bounding strides, while Michael and Stefan transformed into bats and trailed behind them.
They entered the laboratory with practiced ease. More bodies lay inside as well. The soldiers stationed there had fought desperately, but they could not withstand the tide of demodogs pouring in like a flood. They had been completely wiped out.
What was more, many soldiers had been taken alive by the demodogs and absorbed by the Mind Flayer, forming its massive true body.
Those bodies had already been reduced to a gelatinous mass piled up in the fountain plaza, enough to keep Nick and the others busy for a while.
Following the laboratory corridor, they made their way all the way to the otherworld passage. Lin Xiao knew this place inside and out; he could find it even with his eyes closed.
By now, the passage had grown quite a bit larger, more than two meters wide and three or four meters long.
In the original story, this passage became enormous, almost impossible to seal. Fortunately, Eleven had unleashed her full potential and, with great difficulty, closed it in the end.
Zoe and Misty exchanged a glance. Zoe bent down and whispered a few words in Eleven’s ear. The three of them then stood side by side, raised their hands together toward the passage, and activated their powers.
Lin Xiao stood nearby with the Star-Annihilating Battle Axe in hand, guarding against any unexpected change.
Stefan and Michael watched the three of them with curiosity. Closing an otherworld passage was not something one got to witness every day.
As their powers were unleashed, Lin Xiao sensed waves of invisible force surging into the passage, shattering it from within and slowly knitting the opening back together.
With Eleven’s strength alone, sealing the passage might have been difficult. But with Zoe and Misty helping her, the strain on her was greatly eased, and the closing speed increased dramatically.
Watching the passage steadily narrow, Lin Xiao found himself wondering whether, once it was shut, he could use Shadow Traverse to enter the Upside Down again.
That thought would have to wait until the passage was fully sealed.
At last, under the combined effort of the three, the otherworld passage slowly healed shut. The doorway that had set off all these disasters was finally closed.
Was it over? Why did he have a feeling that this passage would be opened again?
Looking at the wall restored to its original state, Lin Xiao could not help but have that thought flash through his mind.
In the third season of the original story, this passage was secretly reopened by Soviet scientists, bringing the Mind Flayer back once more. But now the Mind Flayer had been destroyed as well, and the later plot had entered a state no one could predict.
“Phew. At last the otherworld passage is closed. Now the coven’s supreme witches no longer need to fear monsters invading our world,” Misty said, lowering her hands with a sigh of relief.
Eleven swayed unsteadily. Repeated use of her powers had drained all her physical strength and energy.
Zoe reached out to support her and drew her into her arms. Michael hurried over as well to take over his little girlfriend.
Now that the dust had settled, the group prepared to leave. This was not a place to linger. By tomorrow, no doubt, a large military force would arrive to investigate what had happened here.
Just as they reached the doorway, they were startled to see a middle-aged white man stepping out of the corridor, one hand braced against the wall. He was covered in blood and clearly badly injured.
“Who are you people?” the man asked.
Lin Xiao strode forward and vaguely recognized him. He seemed to be Dr. Sam Owens, the laboratory’s second director.
“Who we are is not important. What matters is that we have already dealt with the matter of the otherworld passage, Dr. Owens,” Lin Xiao said as he spoke, using his Purification skill to heal the wound on the man’s arm.
The fellow was extraordinarily fortunate. In the original story he had not died, and even now he had survived. His luck was simply outrageous.
“That is—do you have powers too?” Dr. Owens asked in surprise, looking at them and feeling that none of this group was ordinary.
“That’s right, Dr. Owens. I’m also a psychic. I hope you can keep what happened tonight a secret.”
Hearing Lin Xiao’s words, Misty stepped forward briskly and shook her head.
“No need to make it that troublesome. I’ll alter his memories and make him forget meeting us. Our world cannot be exposed so easily to ordinary people, or it will only bring us endless trouble.”
Lin Xiao shrugged. Since that was the case, he had nothing more to say. The world had already been saved; as for the aftermath, he would leave it to the professionals.
