Chapter 50: Something Has Happened to Him
Before they parted ways, Zhong Xiao asked Zuo Lan to make a list for her. Zhong Xiao said, “I’ll check if I have any of the medicines on your list. If I do, I’ll bring them to you. If not, there’s nothing I can do.”
In truth, the medicines Zhong Xiao currently possessed would probably cover all the hospital's needs. However, she still couldn’t reveal this openly, and could only offer a portion, keeping some for herself.
No one could blame Zhong Xiao for being selfish. The betrayals of her previous life had left her with deep scars. This time, she had to look out for herself a bit more.
She had only just arrived at Taizhou Island, and whether it was Zuo Lan or the soldiers and residents of the island, she was unfamiliar with everyone. Even if everything seemed fine now, she couldn’t fully trust anyone just yet.
Zuo Lan didn’t know what Zhong Xiao was thinking, but she considered Zhong Xiao’s situation and only asked for a few types of anesthetics and painkillers that the hospital desperately needed—these were essential in a war zone hospital. She didn’t request antibiotics or other medicines that weren’t urgently required, intending to let Zhong Xiao keep those for herself.
The final list Zuo Lan handed over contained only a few anesthetics, mainly for use during surgery.
Zhong Xiao took the list and returned to her dormitory. It was working hours at the military hospital, so the dorm was empty. Still, she wasn’t comfortable using her space so openly. After circling the room, she decided to hide inside the wardrobe, letting the hanging clothes shield her body, before entering her space.
She hadn’t entered the space for several days, and as soon as she did, she was startled by what she saw. In just a few short days, all the seeds of fruits, vegetables, and grains she’d bought in Yuecheng had fully matured!
Fruit trees stood tall and lush, their branches heavy with large, vibrant fruit swaying gently. Their skins gleamed, and a rich fragrance filled the air. The entire space was suffused with the scent of harvest, and walking through it felt like stepping into a dream.
The fertile, endless black soil was covered with crops—wheat, rice, corn—layer upon layer, densely packed, all in a state of abundance.
Peanuts, spinach, water spinach, cucumbers… Every vegetable looked impossibly nutritious, their leaves broad, moist, and faintly glistening. The fruit trees were laden with fruit, swaying gently on their branches. The pond teemed with large, vigorous fish and shrimp.
The chickens, ducks, cattle, and sheep she’d previously kept were all robust and healthy, looking plump and succulent.
But what delighted Zhong Xiao most were the two puppies she’d bought earlier. They’d grown into sturdy adult dogs, their bodies strong, tails curled high, coats glossy, and eyes bright and lively.
When they saw Zhong Xiao, the two dogs ran over, wagging their tails, panting with pink tongues, winding around her feet and letting out soft, playful whines.
Zhong Xiao’s heart bloomed with joy. Squatting down, she gave one of the dogs a vigorous rub.
Crouching amidst the bountiful space, she nodded in satisfaction and casually picked a corn cob. As she expected, there was no need to exert force; the instant her hand touched the corn, it dropped smoothly into her palm.
With a gentle wave of her hand, all the corn in the field detached from their stalks, floated up, and landed neatly in a pile on the ground, forming a small mountain in an instant.
Using the same method, Zhong Xiao gathered all the other produce in the space, stacking them in orderly heaps. Once everything was collected, a line of text suddenly appeared in the space:
[Would you like to nourish them with spiritual spring water? — One-click to check the effects after nourishment.]
Testing it out, Zhong Xiao reached out and tapped the [One-click check] option.
Before her eyes, lines of text slowly appeared:
[Spiritual Spring Corn: Strengthens the body, enhances constitution.
Spiritual Spring Peanuts: Anti-inflammatory, pain relief, calms the mind.
Spiritual Spring Watermelon: Beautifies skin, gives a fair complexion.
Spiritual Spring Pears: Clears lungs, soothes cough, nourishes the throat.
Spiritual Spring Grapes: Brightens and beautifies the eyes, sharpens vision.
Spiritual Spring Fish: Heals wounds, removes scars.
Spiritual Spring Crabs: Reshapes muscles and bones, strengthens the body.
Spiritual Spring Liquor: Strengthens the body (for men only).
...]
There were many more, but Zhong Xiao didn’t have time to read them all. There were even items she didn’t yet have in her space.
She couldn’t note them down one by one, because she suddenly sensed someone entering the dormitory and closing the door—more than one person.
The hurried footsteps of several people echoed, as if they were frantically searching for something.
One of them exclaimed, “Heavens, who would have thought Commander Song would... How could something like this happen?”
“Exactly,” another agreed. “He seems to be alright, but who knows when he’ll recover? What if Commander Song stays like this for the rest of his life...”
“That would be tragic for Commander Song and Director Zuo. One son paralyzed in bed, and now the other in this state…”
“Hey, don’t say such ominous things. Director Zuo will surely have a solution. Let’s hurry up and take these supplies to the emergency center—two seriously injured soldiers need our help. Let’s go!”
The group rushed in and out as quickly as they’d come.
After they had left, Zhong Xiao cautiously emerged from the wardrobe, frowning.
The Commander Song they mentioned must be Song Tingshen.
What happened to him?
Hadn’t the person who reported back said both Commander Song and his brother were out of danger?
Could it be that Song Tingshen, like his elder brother, survived but was left paralyzed...?
