Chapter 134: How Could She Do This?

Huang Zishu crouched down near Xu Lin, watching her prepare the medicine with a face full of concern. “Xu Zhiqing, I’m fine. I just saw you making the medicine and wanted to ask if you’re feeling unwell. If you’re not feeling well, I can help you with your afternoon tasks.”
Seeing Xu Lin look at him in confusion, Huang Zishu flashed a broad smile. “Of course, I’m not doing it for free—just transfer your work credits to me privately.”
“Really? That’s wonderful!” Xu Lin slapped her thigh. She was about to treat some elderly patients and was quite busy.
“Then I won’t go to work this afternoon. You do the work, and the credits go to you.”
“Sure, sure,” Huang Zishu said as he squatted nearby, eyeing the pot of medicine. “What kind of medicine are you making?”
“This? It’s medicine to regulate the body,” Xu Lin explained half-truthfully. “My health isn’t great; I need to nurture it slowly.”
“Is that so? You’re really impressive. You look much better now than when you first came to the countryside.”
Huang Zishu chatted intermittently with Xu Lin, trying to draw some truth from her, but found he couldn’t get a single straightforward answer.
The two skilled conversationalists volleyed back and forth for dozens of exchanges, and Huang Zishu realized he almost slipped up.
Forget it, Xu Zhiqing is a little fox. Afraid of digging deeper, Huang Zishu decided to reveal his own hand first.
Soon after, Huang Zishu conceded defeat and left.
Watching him go, Xu Lin lowered her head and smiled softly. Huang’s grandson was quite clever, knowing how to probe for information.
Unfortunately for him, meeting her meant he learned nothing at all.
What Xu Lin did manage to find out was that both Huang Zishu and Lin Zihao must have worked hard to get assigned as educated youth here.
It seemed they came mainly to care for the two elderly men and had likely pulled many strings to protect the elders from outsiders.
Just then, she saw Ning Xiaodong carrying a basket leaving the youth dormitory.
Such a large man left, yet few paid attention, and no one greeted Ning Xiaodong—as if he were invisible.
Watching Ning Xiaodong disappear, Xu Lin’s smile deepened with meaning.
This youth dormitory truly harbored hidden talents.
When the afternoon work hour arrived, Xu Lin indeed did not show up.
When Qian Li heard that Huang Zishu was helping out and getting work credits privately, she was surprised, as if she never expected Huang Zishu to be that kind of person.

“Linlin, do you think Huang Zhiqing likes you? I’ve never seen Huang Zishu volunteer to help anyone before.”
“He wants the credits,” Xu Lin explained.
Qian Li shook her head. “Huang Zishu and Lin Zihao aren’t short of money. He shouldn’t care about those credits. And Huang Zishu doesn’t seem like the type to help others on his own.”
Xu Lin shrugged, unwilling to explain further. She couldn’t exactly say Huang Zishu wanted her to have time to make medicine pills.
That kid was quite clever—the reasons he gave wouldn’t arouse suspicion.
Still, Huang Zishu usually didn’t come across as an enthusiastic young man, nor had he helped others much, so it seemed odd.
Qian Li’s suspicions were understandable.
After the other educated youths left, Su Liang came out of his room and saw Xu Lin making medicine at the door. He rolled his eyes.
He had planned to rest, but the strong smell of traditional medicine made him unwilling to stay in the dormitory.
As for causing trouble for Xu Lin and telling her to make medicine elsewhere, Su Liang thought it best not to speak up, or he might get scolded.
Once Su Liang left, Xu Lin was alone in the dormitory and quickly felt liberated.
No need to make the medicine here—nothing was more convenient than having the deity himself prepare the medicine. Xu Lin packed up and rode her bicycle to the commune.
By the crossroads near the commune, Du Yong lay on the ground, hugging his leg, eyes vacant, staring at the sky in disbelief at his misfortune.
How could he be so unlucky as to break his leg just by walking? He truly was wretched.
Was there anyone in the world worse off than him?
Passersby saw Du Yong’s pitiful state and kindly approached to show concern. Seeing tears streaming down his face, they felt inexplicable sympathy.
Several good Samaritans wanted to take Du Yong to the hospital, but when they tried to lift him, accidents happened multiple times.
If not for their quick reflexes and numbers, Du Yong would have suffered secondary injuries.
To be safe, they carried Du Yong with extreme caution.
What should have been a ten-minute walk stretched over half an hour, and they hadn’t even left the hospital when they were already drenched in sweat.
Xu Lin rode by and saw several people carrying an injured person moving at a snail’s pace. Curious, she glanced several times.
The sight stunned her. She never expected to see Du Yong here.
Even more surprising was how unlucky he looked—his already scarce luck had completely vanished.
What on earth did Du Yong do today? Why is not an ounce of fortune left?

Even meeting a fox spirit couldn’t have drained his luck so thoroughly.
While Xu Lin observed Du Yong’s unusual state, Du Yong caught sight of her. Their eyes met, and a flash of hatred passed through his despairing gaze.
He blamed Xu Lin. If she hadn’t publicly chosen Liu Pandi as team leader yesterday, he wouldn’t have lost.
Ever since he lost, nothing good had happened to him.
He had planned to accompany Qin Fang to the commune to build connections and develop a relationship, hoping to persuade Qin Fang to help him campaign.
But before anything was settled, misfortune kept piling up.
Since separating from Qin Fang, he had stumbled walking on flat ground, been hit by bird droppings when standing still, and choked on his own saliva.
Xu Lin dismounted her bicycle, ignoring the hatred in Du Yong’s eyes, and asked with concern, “Comrade Du, what happened to you?”
“None of your business,” Du Yong spat through clenched teeth, showing no kindness toward Xu Lin.
“Oh, if Comrade Du doesn’t want to talk, then I’ll take my leave.” Xu Lin said, swung herself back onto her bicycle, and rode off.
What a loser—does he think she wants to meddle in his affairs? Even if Du Yong were to suffer a miserable fate, it wouldn’t concern her.
Seeing Xu Lin leave so decisively, Du Yong was dumbfounded.
Wasn’t that a bit too abrupt?
How could she act like that?
They were both educated youths living in the same dormitory!
The bystanders were also stunned. They thought the unlucky man had met someone he knew, but those four words sent the person away.
Looking at the man’s honest appearance, why did he speak so harshly?
A kind-hearted elderly lady began lecturing Du Yong, telling him he shouldn’t behave like that.
The young lady was only showing concern; why speak so rudely? That was just inviting trouble.
Besides, as a man, he shouldn’t be so petty—real men should be magnanimous.
Even after Xu Lin had gone a good distance, she could still hear the lady’s scolding and couldn’t help but smile.
She rode her bicycle to the hospital pharmacy and handed over the list of medicinal herbs she needed.
Unfortunately, the pharmacy’s stock was limited and could not meet the variety and quantity Xu Lin required.
