Chapter 39: None of Your Business
“Mr. Yang, we’ve already learned a few things. Xia Yufei got into Tianning Normal University from Jiangcheng County. She’s always been a well-behaved girl, working very hard at her studies.”
Yang Fan nodded. He already knew all this. And yet, it was precisely such a good girl that he had ruined. The more he thought about it, the more he felt like a scoundrel.
“Aren’t there performances today?”
“Yes, there’s a show at the teachers’ college square, and Xia Yufei will be performing too.”
“All right, let’s go in and have a look! You all take care of these classmates, and lunch is on me. Don’t anyone leave.”
There was a constant flow of people at the entrance to the college. That’s how it is in university—rules are relaxed and anyone can come and go.
As for where the square was, there was no need to ask. All you had to do was follow the crowd. It was a soccer field with stands all around. Yang Fan and his group found a spot and stood there.
“Boss, that’s Xia Yufei,” the third brother pointed to a girl in the field.
In person, she was even more beautiful than in her photos—her long hair flowing, dressed all in white like freshly fallen snow.
Such a pure girl would bring happiness to any man who married her. But Yang Fan felt wretched—too many women in his life, and each one was a disaster he could never repay.
Amin was quick-witted and hurried to the supermarket to buy drinks.
Several of the young fangirls kept winking at Yang Fan. Cuteness was a good thing; if only Ai Xiaomei were as cute as these girls, there wouldn’t be so much trouble.
But honestly, cute girls were not Yang Fan’s type.
“Next, I’ll perform a dance for everyone!”
Yang Fan paused, and all eyes turned to the stage.
“This dance is dedicated... to someone very special to me.”
It was Xia Yufei’s solo. There was a sorrow in her that could not be touched, and a longing that could never be fulfilled. Who could ever truly understand her yearning?
Perhaps, after a single night, they would become strangers ever after.
In the square, only she could dance like this. Everyone saw her beauty but none saw her tears.
Of everyone present, only Yang Fan understood. Looking at the people around him, he realized that his third brother hadn’t brought him here for fun, but to add to his burden.
“All right, let’s go. Lunch time!”
The third brother was left speechless—why had the boss’s mood soured again?
The little fangirls happily followed along. And at the very instant Yang Fan left, Xia Yufei seemed to sense something. She looked straight at where he had been standing.
“In this vast sea of people, can you find, at a single glance, the one you miss most?”
Offstage, Sun Wen’s face turned livid, and Li Susu was equally shocked.
Because of Xia Yufei’s words. But since when did Xia Yufei have a boyfriend?
The whole crowd burst into applause, but Xia Yufei left the stage in desolation. The one she was waiting for wasn’t there. Even though the whole world cheered, what did it matter if he was absent?
“Yufei, wait for me!” Her roommates caught up, Sun Wen among them.
“Yufei, you have a boyfriend and never even introduced him to us!”
...
“I don’t even know where he is,” Xia Yufei replied with a smile, but seeing Sun Wen beside her, her smile faded instantly.
She didn’t like him, so there was no need to do anything for someone she didn’t care for.
“Then who’s that most special person you dedicated your dance to?”
“Exactly, who is it?”
“It’s him, of course.”
Li Susu and the other roommates groaned, linking arms as they strolled around campus. Sun Wen followed closely behind, his resolve to carry out his plan only strengthened.
In an extraordinarily luxurious restaurant, Yang Fan hosted the group for lunch. He’d barely eaten a few bites when Wu Qian called, saying she’d finished all the notifications, and that Ai Xiaomei and Xu Zihan had gone to the company.
Yang Fan’s face twitched. Whenever Ai Xiaomei went to the company, nothing good ever happened. He didn’t even bother finishing his meal and had the third brother drive him back.
The little fangirls were reluctant to part. Yang Fan maintained his cool demeanor. Downstairs at the company, he rushed straight up.
The girls had ordered takeout and were eating with gusto.
“Bro, you’re back already?” Ai Xiaomei said happily, clutching a drumstick.
Yang Fan shot her a glare. Did he dare not come back?
Wu Qian was also eating at the table and was pleased to have called Yang Fan back.
“I checked the place out. It’s pretty nice,” Xu Zihan said.
“Yes, I think so too,” Yang Fan replied with a smile. Seeing that there was only one drumstick left after all their eating, he wondered if being siblings could ever be pleasant.
Zhang Chen and the others were probably having lunch downstairs. Yang Fan called Zhang Chen, asking him to bring something up when he returned, since he’d barely eaten at all.
Ai Xiaomei swung her legs as she sat on the table, looking as though she might launch into the sky.
It was all her doing...
“How about I show you around?” Yang Fan offered.
“Sure!” Xu Zihan stood up, but Ai Xiaomei kept eating, refusing to let go of the last drumstick.
On the eighth floor, Yang Fan opened the office door for Xu Zihan. He wanted her to see the real Ai Xiaomei.
“This place is pretty big!”
“Don’t even mention it. Look here—from this door is Wu Qian’s office. And here, why is there a double bed? And look at the lighting—it’s got the ambiance of a couple’s suite!”
Xu Zihan smiled faintly. “You know your sister’s always getting you in trouble.”
“I know it every single day!”
“That’s why you should just accept your fate.”
“And here’s a double shower, and the wardrobe—one side is mine, the other is Wu Qian’s.” Yang Fan grew more and more agitated.
“There’s even red wine, bathrobes—is this an office or a hotel?”
“If life is good, you might as well enjoy it! I think it’s great here.”
“Forget it,” Yang Fan sighed helplessly, completely defeated.
Outside, he heard Zhang Chen and the others returning, so he and Xu Zihan went out to meet them.
When the workday ended, someone always needed to keep an eye on things, but everyone hoped the company would get on track soon. Of course, while working, the hunt for secretaries was a necessity.
From the sound of it, they weren’t just looking for one secretary each—good things come in pairs, after all!
“Yang Fan, my secretary is coming to report this afternoon. You have to give her a proper welcome. I’m telling you, she was chosen out of ten thousand candidates!” Zhang Chen said excitedly.
“Yeah, mine should come this afternoon too.”
“Mine as well. You know her—Su Ya!”
...
“I see, so after all these years of competition, Wang Jie finally won and gets to be with Su Ya,” Yang Fan joked.
“Nonsense, how is it a good match with my secretary? She’s just a secretary!”
“A secretary? Isn’t a secretary just...”
Yang Fan quickly shot a look at Xu Tao, who was about to blurt out something inappropriate. Wu Qian was still there!
“All right. Wu Qian will be in charge of all your secretaries from now on. Every secretary reports to her.”
“That works!”
Ai Xiaomei, now full, jumped down from the table, spotted the egg in Yang Fan’s bowl, and snatched it for herself.
“Bro, do you know why I came today?”
“Why?”
“To decorate your office!”
“No need.”
“It’s not up to you!”
