Chapter 99: Sorry
In the suite, Yang Fan and Wang Yun sat together, tense and uneasy.
“Yang Fan, you rose to prominence suddenly last September. Among your women, Lin Ruo and Lin Xi are top-tier bodyguards, ranked third in the assassin world and widely renowned; Xia Yufei is a university student at Tianning Normal University; and Wu Qian is your secretary.
“And in October, you even joined the Tianning Special Police Force, wiped out the Salvation Organization in one stroke, and founded two academies—one a women’s academy that now shelters more than three thousand so-called maids, and the other an academy that houses five or six hundred female slaves. You also single-handedly established the Fanmei Film and Television Group and the Fanmei Resort!”
Yang Fan froze for a moment, then nodded. He truly had not expected Director Wang to have investigated him so thoroughly. Of course, if someone set their mind to it, these openly visible matters could all be found with ease. But the hidden ones...
“All right, stop frightening Yang Fan. Yang Fan, your father is just this kind of man, don’t take it to heart,” Wang Yun’s mother said with a smile.
“How could I be frightening him? I’m just telling the truth!”
“He is exactly like this at home too!”
Yang Fan was startled. The Wang family’s way of doing things was clearly one in which the women held the final say.
“Xiao Fan, let me be frank with you too,” Wang Yun’s mother said. “Your father and I don’t have any special demands. We only hope you will treat Yun’er well.”
“Mom, Dad, please rest assured,” Yang Fan promised.
“Of course we’re at ease. As for the wedding, I don’t think there’s any need to make a big affair of it. Just invite the relatives and friends over for a meal and that will do. Some things don’t need us to spell them out; you know what you’re doing.”
Yang Fan naturally understood that Wang Yun’s parents were protecting him. He had so many women, and the one whose marriage registration he held now was not only Wang Yun.
Even Director Wang was probably fully aware of that.
“Mom, Dad, don’t worry. I will definitely make it up to Yun’er with a proper wedding in the future.”
“There’s no need for that. I’ve lived in the province for years, so I’m naturally familiar with people like you who possess special abilities. Since you’re an ability user, these worldly formalities really aren’t necessary,” Director Wang said.
Wang Yun’s mother also nodded. Then she took out a red envelope and said, “This is only a little token from us.”
“Don’t think it’s too little. Your assets are probably already worth three to four billion by now, aren’t they?”
Yang Fan was overwhelmed with excitement. After all these months, he had finally seen some money.
“That should be enough, I think,” Yang Fan said.
Wang Yun immediately reached out to take it, but her mother swatted her hand away.
“Mom, why are you hitting me?”
“This is for Yang Fan. What business is it of yours?”
Yang Fan accepted it excitedly. “Thank you, Mom and Dad!”
“How is the women’s academy?”
“It’s all right. Their condition has stabilized quite a bit.”
“That’s good. Do you know what your women’s academy represents? It means that in many situations, whether at the provincial level or the city level, people will make things easier for you,” Director Wang said.
“Dad, when I first started, I never thought about any of that. I only wanted those more than three thousand girls to stop suffering.”
Director Wang nodded. That was precisely why this was truly a great act of kindness. Looking at his daughter’s judgment, it was clear she had excellent taste.
“Tianning hasn’t been very peaceful lately. You should be careful too, especially that Zhao Jing of yours. I couldn’t even find any background on her.”
“Dad, Sister Jing she...”
“I’m only reminding Yang Fan. I never said she was a bad person. But Yang Fan, there may be other ability users hiding in Tianning.”
“There are. I’ve already discovered one, though he is only a half-ability user.”
“Take care of yourselves,” Director Wang said.
“Don’t worry, Mom and Dad. We’ll be careful.”
“All right, then that’s it. I’ve come back from the province and I’m a little tired. You should all go do whatever you need to do.”
“Mom, Dad, you haven’t eaten yet, have you? I’ll get something ready for you!”
Yang Fan headed straight for the door.
“Yang Fan, no need.”
“Dad, how can you not eat!”
Yang Fan was thrilled beyond measure. It seemed Wang Yun’s parents really did think well of him.
“Afterward, be better to Yang Fan. Don’t just think about spending money on yourself.”
Even as he left, he could still hear Wang Yun’s mother scolding her from behind.
“I’ve been very good to him already.”
“Very good? Do you think we didn’t see you put the red envelope back into your pocket just now, you little minx?”
“Dad, whose side are you on, anyway?”
...
Yang Fan patted his pocket and nearly toppled over. So that was how the money had made a round trip in his pocket.
At the doorway, Liu Mingfeng and the others were waiting. Yang Fan had told them that if something seemed wrong, they should knock, and now that he came out, he was momentarily stunned.
Family really was better...
“How was it? Everything okay?” Liu Mingfeng asked quietly.
“It’s fine. There was never any real issue. Ye Bing, have someone bring up some food. My father-in-law just came back from the province and hasn’t eaten yet.”
Ye Bing nodded and went to make the arrangements. From inside the suite, a voice rang out.
“Come in already! What are you all standing at the door for?”
“Director Wang, hello!”
“Mr. Liu!” Director Wang and Liu Mingfeng clasped hands tightly. Then he smiled toward the people behind him and said, “Xu Zihan! The big star! And Lin Ruo, Lin Xi—your master and I were classmates!”
“Hello, Uncle!”
The three greeted him in unison, and Director Wang nodded.
“And the one behind there is your son, right, Mr. Liu?”
“Yes, that’s my son, Haoyu!”
Liu Haoyu was rather nervous, because he didn’t know what to call Director Wang. This was a man from the generation of his grandfather.
So he simply pretended to be a shy child.
The food was brought up quickly, and Yang Fan and the others stayed to accompany Wang Yun’s parents through the meal before going downstairs.
Down below, the crowd had not yet dispersed. Everyone was still waiting for the result.
“Brother Yang, how was it? Nothing happened, right?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s good. We were half expecting you and Wang Yun to have to kneel there and explain what was going on,” President Han said with a laugh.
“Oh, now I get it. Young Master Han, is that how you get punished at home? By kneeling?” Yang Fan said.
Everyone burst into laughter. By then it was almost midnight. They chatted a while longer, then gradually dispersed.
Wang Yun did not leave with Yang Fan. That night, she went to stay with her mother.
Lin Ruo, Lin Xi, and Xu Zihan returned to the Wanghai Villa District. Yang Fan stood at the entrance, uneasy for a long time before finally going in.
The villa was deathly quiet. Two rooms still had their lights on. Yang Fan chose an empty bedroom, opened the door, and went inside.
For some reason, he did not even dare face Lin Ruo.
He lay on the bed and tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
In the middle of the night, Lin Ruo came over. She knew Yang Fan was awake.
“That marriage certificate is nothing but a scrap of paper. What I mainly mean is that you should give Yufei, Wu Qian, and Wang Yun a proper status. After all, they followed you.”
“What about the two of us?”
“Why take it so seriously?” Lin Ruo said.
“And if I do take it seriously?”
“Then I’ll still say the same thing: the two of us are impossible. As for you and Lin Xi, when you truly decide to love her, then you can touch her, all right?”
Yang Fan’s eyes flew open. He seized Lin Ruo’s hand, and she paused.
“I want you!” Yang Fan suddenly sat up and pressed her beneath him.
Lin Ruo did not resist, not even when Yang Fan tore her clothes apart...
But reason gradually seized his mind. He did not want to lose Lin Ruo. And once he did this, Lin Ruo would leave.
“Forget it. I’m sorry.” Yang Fan lay back down again.
Lin Ruo slowly rose and continued massaging him.
Between them, that chasm would forever remain uncrossed.
In an instant, tears poured down.
“Why are you crying?”
“I don’t want you to leave!” Yang Fan choked out. In too many moments, his fear—who could ever understand it?
“I won’t leave.”
