Chapter 146: I Can See You Again Dedicated to Mo Xiyan
I naturally objected when he said he wanted to come along. If he went, it would truly turn into a battlefield filled with gunsmoke.
In the end, Young Master Luo compromised and suggested that Guan Erchen accompany me instead.
Guan Erchen was lounging in Chi Mu's arms, playing on her phone. Hearing Luo Ange make this suggestion, she lazily raised her head. "Do you really want me to go? If I go, I'm going to start hitting people."
Chi Mu laughed. "Alright, alright, we wouldn't feel at ease with anyone else going either."
I made a special trip to the flower shop next to the hospital to buy a bunch of premium lilies, and also picked out a fruit basket, before setting off with Guan Erchen for the hospital where Yuan Shengxiao was staying.
I tried my best to appear nonchalant, as if I were merely going to visit an old friend, but Guan Erchen quickly saw right through me. "Oh, please! If you're nervous, just admit it. Why put on an act in front of me?"
I deflated, wiped away a bead of sweat, and smiled awkwardly.
She patted me on the shoulder. "Don't worry, the Yuan family wouldn't dare to make things difficult for you. Do you know why?"
I shook my head. "Because you're coming?"
She let out a chuckle. "Because they know that if they want to break into Kangcheng, no one dares to cooperate with them without Luo Ange's nod. Just think about it—with a single wave of Luo Ange's hand, you have Yong Changzhi, Nie Leiling, Long Jue, Zhou Yang, plus Mei Xiuji and Zheng Nanfeng. It's an invincible lineup."
"Then what if Luo Ange wants to break into the Jingnan market? Would the Yuan family agree?"
Guan Erchen looked at me as if asking whether I had lost my mind. "No matter how much the Yuan family can cover the sky with one hand, have you forgotten who is in Jingnan?"
I froze for a moment before sudden realization dawned, and I smiled with relief.
Yet, the mere thought that I might run into Yuan Shengqi made me inexplicably fearful again.
"What kind of person is Yuan Shengqi?"
Guan Erchen eyed me for a moment. "Yuan Shengqi was sent to the military for training from a young age and never touched the Yuan family's business. He doesn't say much. When he's kind, he's exceptionally kind, and when he's ruthless, he's ruthlessly formidable. He's a dangerous character. But over the past two years, as the Yuan family's business has grown larger and his three younger brothers have proven capable of accomplishing nothing while ruining everything, I suspect the Yuan family is going to experience some major changes soon."
Come to think of it, that made sense. The Yuan family held Fragrance Jewelry's charity gala in Kangcheng precisely to hitch a ride on Luo Ange's coattails. Unfortunately, they played that move wrong, and the three Yuan brothers subsequently rushed to the hospital to give Luo Ange a hard time. It seemed it would be rather difficult for the Yuan family to break into Kangcheng now.
However, I didn't understand much about business matters, so I didn't question Guan Erchen any further.
Upon arriving at the hospital, I saw several hulking bodyguards standing outside Yuan Shengxiao's ward. The entire hallway was exceptionally quiet, and the only sound I could hear was my own breathing.
The bodyguards glanced at us a few times, yet they remained relatively polite. "Please wait a moment, both of you. I'll go in and announce your arrival."
A young man soon walked out, sizing me up with an unfriendly tone. "You're the woman belonging to Luo Ange?"
I smiled. "Hello, I am Yi Lanshan."
He let out a cold snort. "Be on your way. Weasels paying respects to chickens—we don't need it."
I held Guan Erchen back. "Hello, sir. Might I see Miss Yuan?"
He coldly spat out a "No" and made a move to close the door, but suddenly a voice came from behind. "Shengshu, don't be so impolite."
A square-faced man appeared before us. My heart sank, though I maintained my smile. "Mr. Yuan, we meet again."
Yuan Shengqi offered a faint smile and glanced at Guan Erchen. "Miss Guan, long time no see."
Guan Erchen wasn't as easy to deal with as I was. "Yuan Shengqi, who are you brothers trying to put on airs for?"
Yuan Shengqi pulled Yuan Shengshu aside and cleared a path. "Guests are guests, Miss Guan, please don't mind him. Lanshan, you don't mind either. Please, come in."
Hearing him call me Lanshan felt somewhat unsettling inside, but I managed to suppress it. Before I knew it, he spoke again. "Lanshan, I'm not very familiar with Kangcheng. If you don't mind, how about acting as my tour guide in a few days?"
I kept a calm expression on the outside and agreed, though in my mind I was thinking that we would be leaving for the United States very soon, and only a ghost would be your tour guide.
Yuan Shengshu looked as though he disliked me intensely—his aversion was plastered right across his face as he gave me a disgusted, head-to-toe inspection.
We walked inside to find Yuan Shengxiao lying in the hospital bed, flipping through a book.
This was my first time seeing her up close. Although she still bore some injuries on her face and one of her legs was in a cast and suspended in the air, she radiated youthful vitality, looking so pretty it was about to overflow.
I had expected her to fly into a rage upon seeing me, seeing as I was the one who caused her breakup with Luo Ange. If I were in her shoes and met my romantic rival, I would have pounced on her and torn her apart.
Yet, upon seeing me, she offered a slight smile. "Miss Yi, we finally meet."
My heart dropped. It seemed I had underestimated my opponent. Even though she was confined to a hospital bed, it was clear she had never stopped investigating me.
A chill ran down my spine as I placed the flowers on the cabinet. "Miss Yuan, I'm so glad to see you're alright."
She glanced at the bouquet and gave it a sniff. "Very pretty. Thank you for the thought."
Yuan Shengqi gave a light cough. "Miss Guan, I think it would be best if we stepped out for a cup of coffee for a while. What do you think?"
Guan Erchen looked at me, and I patted her hand to reassure her it was fine to go.
Yuan Shengshu was a hothead and somewhat reluctant to leave, but he was deeply afraid of Yuan Shengqi, so he ultimately followed along obediently.
I stood before the hospital bed and bowed slightly. "Miss Yuan, I came here today specifically to apologize. If you have any lingering resentment in your heart, feel free to take it out on me. I promise I won't return a blow or utter a curse."
She was slightly taken aback. "Miss Yi, if we're talking about faults, how am I without blame? I clearly knew Luo Ange didn't love me, yet I still agreed to become engaged to him, and in a moment of impulse, I even threatened him with my life."
"No, no, no. When you were together, he and I had already broken up, so you did nothing wrong. It was my fault—the moment I heard he was in a car accident, I rushed to the hospital and begged him to call off the engagement, completely disregarding your feelings. I'm so sorry, truly sorry... It was all my mistake, please don't blame him."
My words were sincere, and Yuan Shengxiao burst out laughing. "Miss Yi, no wonder Luo Ange holds onto you and refuses to let go, and no wonder even my eldest brother said I've completely lost. At first, I refused to admit defeat, but now that I've seen you, I surrender willingly and completely."
I never expected her to be so reasonable. I was astonished. "You... you don't blame me?"
She shook her head. "Blaming you would only make Luo Ange hate me more. Why would I do something so unrewarding and thankless?"
I breathed a sigh of relief. Never had I imagined this young lady would be so easy to get along with; all my worries along the way had truly been for nothing.
Just then, Luo Ange called. I answered, and he asked me, "Why aren't you back yet?"
I glanced at Yuan Shengxiao and lowered my voice. "A little longer. Is something wrong?"
His tone was somewhat sour. "Nothing much. You're not here, and I can't muster any spirit to do anything."
I hadn't expected him to say such a thing, and my face turned red. Catching the fleeting look of melancholy that crossed Yuan Shengxiao's face, I hurriedly muttered a few words and hung up the phone.
"Was that Luo Ange calling you? I'm truly envious that he cares about you so intensely."
I felt a bit embarrassed. "I'm sure you'll find someone who cares about you just as much very soon."
She smiled faintly. "I hope so."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, I took my leave and stepped out just as Yuan Shengqi and Guan Erchen were returning. He handed me a Starbucks cup. "Here, specially prepared for you."
I froze, sensing that Guan Erchen and Yuan Shengshu were both shooting daggers at me with their eyes. If I dared to take it, they would undoubtedly pounce together and chop off my hand.
Before they had a chance to exchange glances, however, Yuan Shengqi had already shoved the cup into my hands. "Take it, what are you blanking out for?"
He leaned in closer, so close we were almost touching, and whispered in a voice only the two of us could hear, "Lanshan, we have a long way to go."
Guan Erchen yanked me away, snatched the cup of coffee, slammed it heavily back into Yuan Shengqi's hands, and dragged me off.
As soon as we stepped into the elevator, she scolded me. "Are you a pig? What kind of people make up the Yuan family, and you don't even know?"
Scolded like that, I didn't dare utter a single syllable. Realizing that venting her anger on me wouldn't help matters, she changed tack. "That Yuan Shengqi speaks with a forked tongue. No, this won't do—I have to tell that brat to keep his guard up against him."
Since our itinerary for the United States had already been finalized, Brad granted us permission to leave the hospital and return to Luo Ange's villa. The moment we arrived, Luo Ange took Zhu Bang straight to the study, while I went to the walk-in closet to pack our things.
Although Luo Ange had mentioned that our home in New York was already fully stocked and there was no need to pack anything, I still helped him gather some of his personal undergarments. The man suffered from severe mysophobia, and I didn't want him complaining about this and that once we got over there.
Before we parted ways, our clothes had always been arranged together. As for our undergarments, I had always ironed them flat and folded them neatly side by side.
Later, we separated, and now we had reconciled. But ever since our reconciliation, we had remained in the hospital with no chance to return here, and opening the walk-in closet now, everything was still exactly as it had been.
The greatest happiness in the world is precisely this: everything remains unchanged.
While I was busy packing, the sound of chaotic knocking echoed from outside, mingled with A Mu's voice. "Miss, Miss, are you in there?"
Thinking something had happened to Luo Ange again, I hurried over to open the door, only to find A Mu wearing an expression of incredulous joy. "Miss, the Young Master... the Young Master can... can see!"
It took him repeating it several times for me to finally comprehend. I pushed past him and bolted toward the study, only to crash right into someone's embrace at the doorway.
Luo Ange caught me in his arms. "Slow down, slow down. What would you do if you tripped?"
Overwhelmed, I cupped his face, but feeling still a bit uncertain, I held up two fingers and asked him how many there were.
He opened his mouth, bit my finger lightly, and lowered his head to kiss me.
We kissed all the way back to the bedroom. The moment we tumbled onto the large bed, I was still immersed in this blessing that had suddenly fallen from the skies. I cupped Luo Ange's face and demanded he look right at me.
With both hands braced on either side of the bed, he looked deep into my eyes. "Don't worry. It's truly wonderful... I can see you again."
I was so happy I was on the verge of tears. Lately, one bad thing after another had happened, and encountering such a sudden stroke of good fortune felt utterly surreal.
I felt that fate hadn't been entirely ruthless to me after all; it couldn't bear to watch me suffer any longer, and so it had allowed Luo Ange to see once more.
Tears and snot streamed down my face. Luo Ange pulled a tissue to wipe them away, while I grabbed his hands and sobbed uncontrollably. "Luo Ange, Luo Ange, I love you..."
Aside from those three words, I knew of no other language that could properly convey the feelings in my heart.
Brad arrived shortly after, and following a brief examination, he signaled with a glance for me to step outside.
