Qin Tian felt deeply disappointed. He believed that every doctor was driven by the noble intention to heal the sick and help the world. Yet, it was undeniable that some rotten apples existed, and today, Qin Tian happened to encounter one.

“If the patient dies, the origin of this virus may never be known, and research into it could be severely hindered. Are you sure you want to take me away?” Qin Tian gazed expressionlessly at the official from the Health Bureau.

“What a joke! You’re practicing medicine without a license—stop pretending to be some sort of expert. With you here, the patient is likely to die even faster!” The Health Bureau official sneered coldly at Qin Tian. An unlicensed barefoot doctor dared to challenge him?

“Do as you please, then. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.” Qin Tian’s disappointment had reached its peak.

“Take him away!” The Health Bureau official waved his hand decisively.

Qin Tian was then escorted out of the ward, led toward the hospital’s exit. As they reached the entrance of the building, the group ran straight into Lin Jian, who was just coming in.

“What’s going on here?” Lin Jian was momentarily stunned before he spoke.

“He’s practicing medicine without a license. We’re taking him away,” the Health Bureau official said, pushing Lin Jian aside.

“You’re taking him away? You can’t do that! If you take him, the patient will be in grave danger!” Lin Jian quickly protested, blocking their path.

“Step aside! Are you trying to obstruct law enforcement?” The Health Bureau official glared at Lin Jian.

“You cannot take him! Whatever issues there are, wait until this crisis is over!” Lin Jian stood firm, refusing to let them pass. It was absurd—if Qin Tian left, the situation would worsen. They were counting on him to keep the patient alive until the expert team arrived to collect fresh viral samples.

“Who do you think you are? I am Zheng Zhichao—do you think you can stop me? Get out of my way!” Zheng Zhichao shouted.

“You’re Zheng Zhichao, Deputy Director of the Wushi Health Bureau?” Lin Jian hesitated for a moment.

“I’m Lin Jian, Captain of the Comprehensive Law Enforcement Team from the Police Bureau. You can’t take him.” Lin Jian announced his identity as well.

“A mere captain dares to block me? Bring your director if you want to negotiate. Get lost!” Zheng Zhichao cursed.

Lin Jian’s expression soured. The title “Captain of the Comprehensive Law Enforcement Team” didn’t sound particularly impressive—more like someone dealing with minor issues, such as street vendors breaking regulations or rescuing stray cats.

But in reality, the organizational structure had long since changed. The captain of the Comprehensive Law Enforcement Team was actually the third-in-command in the police bureau, just below the director and deputy director.

“Director Zheng, let me explain. If you take Qin Tian away, the patient inside won’t survive!” Lin Jian pleaded earnestly. “Thanks to Qin Tian, the patient was pulled back from the brink of death. The experts are on their way. The patient must be kept alive!”

Lin Jian explained patiently. Rank mattered—though they weren’t in the same department, the fact remained that Zheng Zhichao outranked him.

“No way! You still want him to treat the patient? I think you should be locked up too!” Zheng Zhichao glared at Lin Jian.

Under ordinary circumstances, letting Qin Tian stay until the experts arrived wouldn’t have been an issue. But now, things were different. In a few days, the director of the Wushi Health Bureau would retire, and Zheng Zhichao needed every opportunity to climb higher. Catching an unlicensed practitioner might not be a big deal, but with some maneuvering, it could be a noteworthy achievement. He had to rack up as many accomplishments as possible before the current director stepped down.

He couldn’t afford to waste a moment.

Lin Jian frowned slightly. Was the only option to forcibly take Qin Tian back? That would look bad, but Zheng Zhichao seemed determined not to yield.

Lin Jian gritted his teeth; this matter was too important, and he couldn't let them take Qin Tian away, no matter what.

“Are you still refusing to move?” Zheng Zhichao shouted.

“Bring him back!” Lin Jian ordered, steeling himself.

The police officers exchanged glances, hesitated briefly, but ultimately moved forward—after all, Lin Jian was their direct superior.

“You dare defy me?” Zheng Zhichao hadn’t expected Lin Jian to try and snatch Qin Tian away.

“Captain Lin, it’s fine. I’ll go with them,” Qin Tian interjected, stopping Lin Jian.

Though Lin Jian’s actions were meant to prevent the patient’s death, his willingness to intervene directly touched Qin Tian.

“That won’t do!” Lin Jian protested; he was counting on Qin Tian to save the patient.

“It’s alright.” Qin Tian winked at Lin Jian. “I have a way to keep everyone alive. But some people will have to face consequences later,” he added.

Lin Jian frowned, but finally chose to trust Qin Tian. After all, Qin Tian had already accomplished what even Li Xiaohan couldn’t—he had saved a patient others deemed beyond hope.

“Hmph! Take him away!” Zheng Zhichao snorted, secretly pleased—another small victory for him.

Qin Tian remained calm; he felt no anxiety. Just now, he had devised a method to suppress the virus and cure the patient.

He had already tested it on the patient moments before; the patient was no longer in danger of dying, and could survive at least three more days.

Lin Jian watched Qin Tian leave, then returned to the ward. What he saw inside left him utterly stunned.

The patient was convulsing on the bed, while Li Xiaohan and the others stood by, arms folded, doing nothing.

“What are you doing? Start resuscitating him!” Lin Jian shouted anxiously.

“Captain Lin, we can’t save him. We’ve already tried earlier,” Li Xiaohan replied helplessly.

“You know you can’t save him, yet you reported Qin Tian for practicing without a license?” Lin Jian glared at Li Xiaohan. Li Xiaohan was a renowned doctor in Wushi, but Lin Jian knew exactly what kind of person he was.

Li Xiaohan was the typical mix of seventy percent hypocrite and thirty percent genuine scoundrel.

“He really is practicing without a license. I’m a law-abiding citizen—was it wrong to report him?” Li Xiaohan said coolly.

Lin Jian fell silent. That was true, but this was a special situation requiring special handling.

He decided he had to find a way to get Qin Tian released, so he planned to return to the bureau immediately and ask the director or deputy director to intervene.

Lin Jian donned a temporary protective suit, hurried out of the hospital, got into his car, and was about to leave when a police officer suddenly ran over and knocked on the window.

Lin Jian was puzzled—was there another emergency?

He rolled down the window. The officer saluted, then said, “Captain Lin, we’ve made a discovery.”

“What discovery?” Lin Jian asked, puzzled.

“We found a hair among the victim’s hair that doesn’t belong to the victim,” the officer said.

“Oh? Go on,” Lin Jian nodded. This was good news—a breakthrough.

“After analysis, it was identified as wolf hair,” the officer said.

Lin Jian was stunned. Was it really a wolf that injured people?
