Chapter Twenty-Six: The Chase
To reach the Jiang family, one had to pass through a winding country path, the kind surrounded by beautiful scenery. As they drove along this little road, a wolf suddenly leapt out! Lin Jian was behind the wheel and nearly crashed into it.
By all logic, there shouldn’t be any wolves in a place like this.
“Is that the wolf from your circus?” Lin Jian asked.
“No,” Qin Tian answered with certainty. He knew the big wolf from the circus well—there was no way he’d mistake it.
“Then it seems the culprit behind the recent wild animal attacks is that wolf we just saw!” Lin Jian narrowed his eyes. Now the relevant authorities would have to work together to track the beast’s whereabouts.
“Watch out!” Qin Tian suddenly shouted.
The wolf had returned, and this time it lunged straight at them!
Bang!
The massive body of the wolf slammed against the car, causing the entire vehicle to shake violently. Both Qin Tian and Lin Jian felt a jolt of pain in their insides—they hadn’t expected the wolf to be so extraordinarily strong!
“Damn, this thing’s strength is unreal! Is it going to wreck the car?” Qin Tian’s eyes widened in terror.
After ramming the car, the giant wolf didn’t leave. Instead, it began circling them, as if pondering how to deal with this iron lump.
“What should we do?” Qin Tian asked. There was no one else around, and they were completely isolated.
Even if someone did show up, who could save them from the jaws of this beast—unless it was the army!
Lin Jian frowned slightly. The wolf was enormous—at least twice the size of a normal wolf.
“If we stay inside the car, it won’t be able to break in for a while,” Lin Jian said.
He immediately called the police station to report the incident, requesting that all explosive ordnance personnel and armed officers be dispatched. He also contacted the nearby military district, hoping they could send an armored vehicle.
A wolf this large was not something ordinary people or equipment could handle—it required serious firepower.
After circling the car a few more times, the giant wolf seemed to lose interest. It shook itself and then wandered off.
Watching the wolf’s silhouette recede, Qin Tian breathed a sigh of relief. That had been truly perilous.
“I’ll take you back to the Jiang family, then I have to start tracking that wolf immediately,” Lin Jian said.
“I’ll go with you!” Qin Tian offered after a moment’s thought.
“You? Aren’t you tired? Besides, this has nothing to do with you,” Lin Jian replied.
“I’m not tired—got scared wide awake. Besides, I want to help. Maybe I can actually do something,” Qin Tian insisted.
If it had been anyone else, Lin Jian would have sent them home without a second thought. But Qin Tian was different—miracles seemed to follow him. His medical skills were exceptional; his acupuncture could bring the dying back to life, and he had even eradicated that mysterious virus with traditional medicine. Truly remarkable.
Bringing Qin Tian along might actually prove useful. For instance, if anyone got seriously injured, Qin Tian might be able to save their life—and with it, a family.
“All right! But if we do find that giant wolf, you are to stay in the car,” Lin Jian instructed, wanting to ensure Qin Tian’s safety.
“No problem,” Qin Tian agreed.
Lin Jian sent his location to the station and began tracking the wolf.
The giant wolf had followed the country path straight ahead. Wu City was famous for its urban village—a genuine village, with a high-end residential district at its center, surrounded by all the amenities of modern living.
The Jiang family resided in this upscale neighborhood.
Wu City’s layout was distinct: four concentric rings. The outermost was the suburbs, followed by a ring of developed towns, then the villages, and finally, the innermost circle of luxury residential clusters.
In this urban village, every household raised chickens, ducks, and geese. The wolf must have come for food.
Qin Tian and Lin Jian got out and visited a few homes. Sure enough, they learned that many households had inexplicably lost poultry in recent days.
It had to be the work of the giant wolf.
When they asked if anyone had been attacked, everyone shook their heads. Still, some reported seeing, late at night, a pair of glowing eyes the size of rice bowls—surely belonging to a monstrous beast.
Lin Jian and Qin Tian exchanged a glance. That confirmed it: the giant wolf was lurking nearby.
“Let’s see if there’s a suitable place for it to hide,” Lin Jian suggested.
Qin Tian nodded, and the two of them drove aimlessly around the urban village.
“Captain Lin, look over there—isn’t that a perfect hiding spot?” Qin Tian pointed to a wooded area in the middle of a lake, accessible only by a narrow path.
“Yes, that does look like an ideal place. You stay in the car; I’ll check it out,” Lin Jian said.
Qin Tian thought for a moment and agreed. He moved into the driver’s seat so that, if anything happened, he could pick Lin Jian up and speed away at once.
Lin Jian got out, crossed a field, and reached the lakeside, where a muddy path led to the woods in the center of the lake.
He suddenly crouched down, inspecting the ground. Amid the mud, there were some faint depressions. Though the prints weren’t clear, it looked like wolf tracks.
So this was the place.
Lin Jian narrowed his eyes. The giant wolf might be in the woods right now.
He decided not to venture in alone but to wait for reinforcements. If he went in by himself and the wolf was inside, it would be suicide.
“How did it go, Captain Lin? Any luck?” Qin Tian asked.
“I found wolf tracks. It’s definitely in there,” Lin Jian nodded.
“Captain Lin, look out—it’s coming!” Qin Tian suddenly shouted, as the giant wolf burst from the woods at an incredible speed, tearing across the muddy path and sending water flying everywhere.
With a splatter of wet footsteps, the wolf closed in on Lin Jian.
Lin Jian turned, startled—he hadn’t expected the wolf to charge out.
Qin Tian started the car, flooring the accelerator.
With a roar from the engine, the car shot forward—not toward Lin Jian, but straight at the wolf.
If he’d tried to pick up Lin Jian, it would have been too late; opening the door would have let the wolf attack. The only option was to use the car to block the beast.
The giant wolf saw the iron lump barreling toward it but didn’t dodge.
Bang!
With a thunderous crash, wolf and car collided. The great beast was sent flying, and the car spun through the air several times before slamming to the ground.
“Qin Tian!” Lin Jian cried out in alarm.
