Chapter 104: This Damn War (3/3) – Please Vote for Me

Gu Yi’s body was still exhausted. He had slept on the jolting carriage, though it was uncomfortable and the uneven terrain made the journey very bumpy. The battle with Mo Chi had drained all his strength.
Shu Le was not as carefree as he was. She sat cross-legged in silence, quietly trying to restore some spiritual energy until the caravan came to a stop. At that moment, she opened her eyes.
“Gu Yi, Gu Yi, we’ve stopped.”
Outside, the situation was unclear. They could only hear footsteps going back and forth and the sound of branches snapping. Soon after, a fire was lit, blazing fiercely, the firewood crackling loudly. Shu Le parted the curtain slightly and glanced out, realizing it had grown dark.
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, Gu Yi awoke. Unlike Shu Le and Shu Yu, his body had not suffered many injuries. Although some skin was bruised and discolored, overall the meridians inside his body had been well protected by the spiritual energy from the Lin Guang Gong technique that Xiao Yiyi had taught him. This technique was formidable; it was difficult for these people to inflict serious harm on him.
However, with his spiritual energy depleted and his strength spent, only a few hours had passed, and full recovery was uncertain.
Clang! Clang!
The curtain at the front of the carriage was lifted, and two roasted lamb legs were thrown in. “Eat! Die with some dignity. Don’t starve to death like a wretched ghost.”
They were indeed hungry.
“Some water, too,” Gu Yi said, parched. How long had it been since he last drank?
“Damn it, a captive wanting food and drink? Where in this wild wasteland am I supposed to find water for you!”
“Are you Yu Qin?” The voice sounded like Shu Yu’s.
She only asked that and then fell silent. Though they could not see the expressions of the people outside, Yu Qin soon returned with water.
Gu Yi felt satisfied. “Eat. You must be hungry too, right?”
“You can’t eat this,” Shu Le leaned back and made room. In her mind, she ran through the various ways the enemy might have tried to poison them. “If I were outside, I would definitely have poisoned the food to weaken them.”
Gu Yi turned the lamb leg in his hand, noticing nothing unusual but considering Shu Le’s words as very plausible. “If we don’t eat, we’ll starve to death. Besides, these lamb legs are so obvious. If they wanted to poison us, they’d force-feed us even if we refused.”
“We won’t last long on an empty stomach.”
That was true.
But Shu Le held an indomitable spirit. “Even if we starve to death, I won’t obediently be taken away and locked up. The Eighteenth Tower Lord couldn’t escape either; we definitely can’t endure their poison.”
“The Eighteenth Tower Lord…” Gu Yi lowered his raised arm. “You mean there was originally an Eighteenth Tower Lord in Luyang Institute who was captured by the Great Rain Palace people?”
“I overheard it in the courtyard by chance. That was twenty years ago. It’s been so long now, no one knows if the Eighteenth Tower Lord is dead or alive.”
In the still night, those words carried a certain melancholy.
That was a tower lord, respected by all in the Xu Kingdom and honored by His Majesty.
Yet he was captured by the Great Rain Palace, and after twenty years, his fate remained unknown.

“He’s alive.”
Gu Yi and Shu Le looked up simultaneously. Sure enough, someone lifted the curtain and entered. Shu Yu had changed into a clean set of clothes from somewhere.
“Really?” Shu Le was slightly surprised.
“Yes, but I don’t think you want to see him.”
Gu Yi said nothing, wanting to hear what the young woman would say next.
“To see him means you can never run away again. The chance to escape is only before you reach the Great Rain Palace. This journey will take three days, so recover quickly and try to find a way to escape during these three days.”
“But don’t rush to escape. Zhang Weiyu is strong. Even if you recover eighty percent of your strength, you won’t get away, and it will give him an excuse to kill.”
“You can’t beat him?” Gu Yi propped his chin and asked.
“Before, no, but the difference was small.” Shu Yu answered honestly.
Afterwards, she felt more confident because the fight with Yu Mo Chi had given her some insights. Once they returned, she could meditate quietly and perhaps gain something.
“Hmm…” Gu Yi pondered strategies.
Shu Le spoke, “We’re not afraid of anything else, but we can’t eat this food.”
Shu Yu saw the two lamb legs and pressed her finger against her abdomen, releasing a few strips of pale green spiritual mist.
“This spiritual mist has purification power. The Mo tribe women all have pale and pure complexions because of this mist. With it, you can eat.”
“Thank you, Shu Yu.” Shu Le believed that her former opponent was truly helping them. The Mo tribe rarely used this spiritual mist.
“Thanks.” Gu Yi took a bite. Perhaps it was just his imagination, but the taste was noticeably fresher.
“We are all fighting for our own...” She wanted to say she was fighting for the Great Rain Palace, and Gu Yi for the Xu Kingdom.
People are good at heart; it’s just the paths they take that conflict.
Perhaps truly evil people are rare in this world. Even Zhang Weiyu probably has his own sense of justice.
Gu Yi sometimes thought about this but refused to let such philosophical questions confuse him. “Let’s go back. If you stay here too long, won’t Zhang Weiyu notice?”
“He...” Shu Yu seemed to remember something, her eyes suddenly turning to Gu Yi suspiciously. “If I’m right, you said something to Zhang Weiyu that unsettled him.”
Gu Yi was stunned. “I don’t know. Don’t talk nonsense.”
“It must be you. Our palace has strict rules, and Zhang Weiyu hasn’t dared to show that look in years. Your words have already harmed him greatly.”
Page 3/3
“Harmed him greatly?”
Shu Le didn’t understand this.
“Is it because he saw your face?”
“Yes. We Mo tribe women are very familiar with that look from men. I could tell, and so could the palace lord. It can’t be hidden.”
“So isn’t he scared to death now?” Gu Yi suddenly wanted to laugh.
Shu Yu looked at Gu Yi, who kept gnawing on the lamb leg. Many called him a transcendent scholar. “I don’t get along with Zhang Weiyu, so scaring him is fine...”
“It’s just that I don’t know if letting you go will bring disaster to the Great Rain Palace. Just one sentence from you made Zhang Weiyu break out in a cold sweat.”
“Honestly, you Mo tribe people are strange,” Gu Yi shrugged. “You’re naturally beautiful. What’s wrong with others wanting to look?”
Shu Le quietly tugged at his sleeve.
Now, the only one helping them was Shu Yu.
“I think what you said is strange. From our perspective, those looks bring us great pain. Do you understand that?”
Fortunately, Shu Yu didn’t storm off this time but was willing to argue a little.
Gu Yi continued, “What causes your pain isn’t their looks, but your weakness.”
Shu Yu was choked. “Anyway, you’re the first person I’ve seen who used the beauty of Mo tribe women to kill. Have you ever thought what I would do if Zhang Weiyu had gone all out back then? What would I do?”
Forget it. Shu Yu recalled what Mo Chi originally intended to do to her, and this guy just wanted to let go and not get involved.
For him, everything was for Luyang Institute. Maybe Zhang Weiyu made a mistake, was executed by the palace lord, and she severed ties before being humiliated — that way, both right and left palace guards would perish. That was the best outcome.
At this point, Shu Yu was somewhat angry and got off the carriage without a word.
“She seems mad at you.”
“Why do you think she’s mad?”
“Because you used the beauty of Mo tribe women to try to trap both palace guards to their doom.”
Gu Yi looked down, chewing silently, giving no response.
“Do you really think that way?” Shu Le asked. Now she understood what it meant to manipulate hearts — it was often more terrifying.
Gu Yi remained silent, gnawing on the lamb leg with eyes unreadable.
He just felt this was war.
