Chapter 87: A Reunion with an Old Foe

“A Rank-Eight ferocious beast? No. Too weak.”
Watching a patterned rock sheep flee in panic, Chen Qi shook his head slightly.
He had already been wandering the surrounding area for twenty minutes, hoping to find a powerful ferocious beast on which to use this token. Unfortunately, the more desperate he became, the harder it was to find one. The few he had managed to locate had all run away the moment they saw him.
The dense fog restricted his vision just as much as it hindered his enemies, leaving him to blunder aimlessly through the mountains alone.
And the more he thought of Yun Tianxin waiting for him, the more anxious he became. But if he returned just like this and ended up harming her, what then?
The token clenched in his left hand seemed to have become a scorching hot potato. In his frustration, Chen Qi nearly hurled it to the ground.
At that moment, it seemed the heavens had heard his plea. From the distant mountains came a familiar eagle cry.
Chen Qi froze for an instant, then was overcome with delight. He hurried to a relatively open area, raised his blood-red saber toward the sky, and waved it provocatively while staring at the purple silhouette of the bird about to sweep past in the distance.
The scene was faintly comical, like some stranded person on Earth desperately waving a conspicuous signal marker to summon a helicopter...
High in the sky, a purple raptor glided at low altitude.
As it flew leisurely, the Purple Lightning Eagle cried out from time to time, proclaiming its sovereignty over the mountain range below.
Clutched in its talons was a Redstripe Wild Boar, already paralyzed by electricity. Its crimson hide was scorched black in places, and it occasionally let out a feeble growl that revealed its agony.
As a Rank-Five flying ferocious beast, the Purple Lightning Eagle considered its life exceptionally comfortable.
Most beasts stronger than it remained on the ground. Once it climbed high enough, they could do little more than watch it helplessly from below.
Most beasts weaker than it, meanwhile, were already part of its diet. With its tremendous speed and unique lightning-infused power, it had virtually no natural predators.
Its only real concerns were what to eat each day and how to catch prey that was becoming increasingly cunning.
Especially after laying several eggs in its nest, it often felt that it could never eat its fill. The last time, it had flown for half a day just to find a lost marmot for lunch—and that had barely been enough to wet its appetite.
And that wretched deadbeat eagle had vanished completely after mating with it a few times, leaving it to suffer through its pregnancy alone. Even its favorite purple lightning-patterned feathers had turned gray from hunger.
But now, the delicious Redstripe Wild Boar beneath its claws was constantly wafting the aroma of roasted meat toward it. It could hardly wait to return to its nest and feast!
“Hmm? Is that a hairless, upright ape down there? Why does this one look vaguely familiar?”
The Purple Lightning Eagle blinked its keen eyes and was just about to fly past.
It considered itself highly knowledgeable about hairless upright apes.
There was a vast difference between the old upright apes and the young ones. The former, in particular, would chase it every time they encountered it in the mountains. As a result, it no longer dared hunt young upright apes casually.
Well, unless it was truly starving.

At the thought of young upright apes, a flavor that existed only in its memories surfaced in the Purple Lightning Eagle’s mind.
The meat had sizzled delightfully and possessed an excellent texture. The females in particular had a certain fragrance to them.
“Hmm?”
The Purple Lightning Eagle blinked hard again, as if unable to believe its eyes.
Why was that young upright ape not running upon seeing it? Was it provoking the eagle? Did it really look so easy to bully?
At that thought, an inexplicable fury flared in the Purple Lightning Eagle’s heart. It might fear attracting the attention of the old upright apes, but as an overlord of the skies, its dignity could not be disregarded by creatures that had once appeared on its menu!
In an instant, the Purple Lightning Eagle lowered its body, preparing to swoop past and teach the young upright ape a lesson.
Since it still had lunch clutched beneath its claws, it spread its several-meter-long wings, intending to make a magnificent, lightning-wreathed slash.
Seeing that the Purple Lightning Eagle had finally taken the bait, Chen Qi grew excited. This was the enemy that had terrified him time and again, and he intended to teach the feathered beast a lesson it would never forget.
He immediately dismissed the idea of using the Spirit-Splitting Mystical Seal to interrupt the attack. In his view, the Purple Lightning Eagle was among the stronger Rank-Five ferocious beasts and would not be killed instantly. If his first strike failed, he might never get another chance to avenge himself.
These thoughts flashed through Chen Qi’s mind in an instant. He exhaled the stale breath he had been holding for a long time and struck back with his saber!
Clang!
The blood-red saber smashed into the Purple Lightning Eagle’s wing, colliding with several feathers and producing the sound of metal striking metal. The impact caused the eagle’s body to pause for the briefest moment.
Chen Qi frowned. He had not expected the purple feathers on the eagle’s wings to be as hard as metal.
What he did not know was that the Purple Lightning Eagle was even more enraged.
It was in a hurry to eat lunch!
It had merely intended to teach that young upright ape a lesson.
And the creature had actually dared to draw a blade!
A surge of fury rose into the Purple Lightning Eagle’s beak, causing its purple plumage to take on a faint reddish hue.
It stopped holding back. Several of the wing’s vital feathers lit up, and in an instant, its entire body was surrounded by a pale violet electric field.
Purple lightning surged along the saber and into Chen Qi’s body, leaving him tingling all over as the unexpected change caught him off guard.
Seeing the young upright ape tremble under the current like all the other loathsome upright apes, a cold look appeared in the Purple Lightning Eagle’s eyes.
Even without using its talons, it still possessed a signature technique.
As the violet electric field crackled, the Purple Lightning Eagle gave a slight beat of its other wing. Its body turned one hundred and eighty degrees in an instant, becoming completely vertical.
In that position, its left wing pulled free of Chen Qi’s saber while its right wing traced a streak of violet light toward his chest.
Chen Qi had only just broken free of the paralysis. Seeing the electrified wing about to cleave him apart, he finally unleashed Focus Burst.

Feeling the nerves within his torso suddenly spring to life, Chen Qi exhaled as he controlled the flesh of his chest and abdomen to contract inward. By the narrowest margin, he evaded the deadly slash.
He had learned this move during his battle with the female master of the swordsmanship hall after provoking her. Used at this moment, it was perfectly suited to the situation.
Sensing that its wing had missed, the Purple Lightning Eagle opened its beak. Undiscouraged, it shot straight forward and flew away.
In its eyes, the young upright ape had simply been lucky. It still had lunch to eat, so it would spare him for the time being.
When Chen Qi realized that the Purple Lightning Eagle actually intended to leave, his heart lurched.
How could he allow the enemy he had painstakingly lured out to simply fly away?
“Hey!”
Chen Qi waved his blade and shouted, attempting to draw the Purple Lightning Eagle’s attention once more.
As it climbed higher, the Purple Lightning Eagle tilted its sharp beak and revealed a distinctly human look of mockery.
The eagle had a meal to enjoy. It had no interest in quarreling with what had once been food.
“What should I do...?”
Seeing that the Purple Lightning Eagle had no intention of looking back, Chen Qi grew frantic. His mind raced as he tried to think of a way to make it turn around.
“Anger attracts life more than any other emotion.”
A flash of inspiration struck Chen Qi, and he performed an act of extreme humiliation.
To the Purple Lightning Eagle’s astonishment, he turned his back on it and used the back of his saber to pat his own buttocks.
In an instant, he sensed a razor-sharp killing intent from above.
The moment that killing intent arose, it seemed to sweep across half the sky.
When the Purple Lightning Eagle saw the gesture, most of its feathers sprang upright. The faint flickers of electricity joined into a continuous sheet, while arcs of lightning as thick as a man’s forearm exploded through the air.
The Rank-Five ferocious beast, overlord of the skies, had finally been driven into a true rage!
It would use the blood from this young upright ape’s heart to defend its dignity!
