Chapter 136: Rebuilding Beisha!
Irwin's eyes instantly turned bloodshot with rage as he rallied his troops, preparing to hunt down the Pluto and exact revenge!
"Calm down! Do you really want to watch these brave warriors march to their deaths for nothing?"
Chu Xiao tried to persuade Irwin not to be too reckless, pointing out that their forces were simply no match for the Pluto. But at that moment, Irwin was too consumed by anger to listen to reason!
"Commander Chu, we are deeply grateful for your reinforcements to Beisha. This is a blood debt for the people of Beisha, and we will settle it ourselves so we don't drag you down!"
Irwin was about to lead his troops out when Chu Xiao and Dell intercepted him, urging him to consider the lives of his soldiers!
"We will definitely avenge Beisha, but not now. The Pluto has already set up an inescapable net waiting for you. To go right now is nothing short of suicide!"
Hearing Chu Xiao's words, Irwin paused to think. The fierce hostility in his eyes subsided a little. He looked back at the men under his command, almost all of whom bore various injuries. Unwilling to send them to certain death, he ultimately dismissed the thought!
"Our most important task right now is to reinforce our defenses to prevent another attack by the Pluto, and then rebuild our homeland so the people have a place to live!"
Chu Xiao's words completely dispelled Irwin's urge for immediate revenge. He realized he should not let hatred cloud his judgment and that he needed to put his people first!
Following this, Irwin joined forces with Chu Xiao to reconsolidate the defenses and rebuild Beisha City. For the foreseeable future, Beisha would have to set aside the alliance matters and remain behind to focus on reconstruction.
There was too much work waiting to be done. This was precisely what the Pluto wanted; a direct assault on Beisha would have cost it far too many casualties!
After arranging for the wounded to be placed in temporary quarters, Chu Xiao led his men back to Kyushu, while the other allied forces returned to their respective bases. The foreign delegates, however, accompanied Chu Xiao to Kyushu.
"Since we are short a member now, perhaps we should just dissolve this alliance right here and now!"
Mu Keyan wanted to seize this opportunity to disband the coalition. America had never truly wanted to join the four-nation alliance in the first place, and she used the Beisha incident as a convenient pretext to propose dissolving it.
"Absolutely not! Even though Beisha is temporarily unable to participate, three nations remain. Why should we dissolve?"
Dell voiced his objection. Having finally found the shelter of a powerful nation like Kyushu, how could he agree to dissolve the alliance so easily? Furthermore, the incident in Beisha had heightened his sense of crisis.
Terrified that the Pluto's next target might be his own country, he resolutely refused to support any dissolution of the alliance.
The more Chu Xiao thought about it, the stranger it felt. Why had the Pluto reacted so swiftly, as if it had received advanced intelligence? After Chu Xiao and his forces attacked the Pluto's lair, shouldn't it have stayed back to defend its stronghold?
How could it have immediately launched a counterattack against Beisha? Did it not fear that Chu Xiao would launch another offensive against its lair? These questions swirled in Chu Xiao's mind.
They reignited his previous suspicions. He grew increasingly convinced that there was more to this matter than met the eye; it was far too complex to be a mere coincidence.
Chu Xiao suspected there was a traitor among their ranks, but lacking proof, he could not sound the alarm just yet. Irwin was the least likely suspect, as he would never allow the Pluto to attack his own country.
Even so, Irwin could not be completely ruled out. Aside from Chu Xiao, the other three all warranted suspicion. Mu Keyan had consistently opposed the alliance, making direct collaboration unlikely, which left Dell as the prime suspect.
Dell had continuously opposed dissolving the alliance, and O'Shea was the one who had initially proposed it in the first place, leaving Dell as Chu Xiao's primary focus of suspicion!
Either Dell had no involvement at all, or he was the most suspicious of all. Out of the four individuals, only he had argued against breaking up the alliance. A traitor would naturally oppose disbanding the coalition in order to continue leaking intelligence, though these were still merely Chu Xiao's speculations.
Of course, it was also possible that all of them were entirely innocent and that this was nothing more than a coincidence. Chu Xiao sincerely hoped there was no traitor among them, as such betrayal would be a disgrace to any nation and to all of humanity.
Chu Xiao decided to shelve the matter temporarily and observe quietly. After all, these individuals were high-ranking representatives of their respective nations; making accusations without concrete evidence would only provoke internal conflict.
The four nations absolutely could not afford to fracture right now. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Chu Xiao knew better than to speak rashly, choosing instead to observe in secret for a time.
The convoy rolled back into Kyushu in a grand procession, with Wang Tao already waiting outside the gates. Deeply worried about the situation in Beisha, he had been on edge the entire time.
"How is the situation in Beisha? Why are only the three of you back? Where is Irwin?"
Seeing Chu Xiao and the others step out of the vehicles without Irwin, Wang Tao anxiously demanded an update. He desperately hoped Beisha hadn't fallen to the Pluto, as losing them would deprive humanity of a crucial force in the war!
"Beisha was devastated by the Pluto, but most of the people survived. The infrastructure suffered heavy damage, though, and Irwin is busy organizing the reconstruction, so he couldn't come back with us!"
Hearing this, Wang Tao felt a wave of relief. Buildings could always be rebuilt, but once lives were lost, nothing could bring them back. If Beisha had fallen completely, the Pluto would have turned its sights on other nations next.
It was already past eleven o'clock at night. After chatting with Wang Tao for a few more moments, Chu Xiao and the others returned to the villa. Hearing the door open, Wang Luolu rushed down the stairs without even taking time to put on her shoes.
Seeing that Chu Xiao had returned safely, she leaped joyfully straight into his arms. Mu Keyan and Dell, witnessing the affectionate scene, felt like oversized, blinding light bulbs and quietly slipped past them to head upstairs.
"Brother Xiao, you're finally back! I was worried sick. Please take me with you next time—I don't want to be left behind waiting alone again!"
What Wang Luolu feared most was waiting. She dreaded a repeat of the past, where waiting meant receiving a phone call informing her that Chu Xiao had been injured. She wanted to stay by his side through thick and thin, unfazed by whatever dangers lay ahead.
"No, I can never allow you to face even the slightest danger. You are the only person I care about besides my parents. If anything happened to you, what would I do?"
This was the first time Chu Xiao had ever spoken such tender and emotional words. Wang Luolu was overjoyed to hear them, though she still harbored a desire to accompany him on his missions.
Yet, seeing how resolute Chu Xiao's attitude was, she pressed the matter no further. Just seeing him return safe and sound was enough to fill her heart with happiness.
"Brother Xiao, have you eaten yet? Let me go cook something for you!"
"Good, I haven't eaten all day!"
Wang Luolu hopped down from Chu Xiao's arms and hurried into the kitchen to busy herself, while Chu Xiao sat down to earnestly review everything that had happened that day, carefully replaying every single detail in his mind.
Suddenly, Chu Xiao remembered that during their time in Beisha, Dell had slipped away alone for a period and hadn't been with the rest of them. Not only that, but Dell woke up unusually early every morning and would head out for reasons unknown!
Chu Xiao decided to focus his observations on Dell, planning to follow him and find out what he was really up to. Just as Chu Xiao was lost in thought, Wang Luolu walked over to his side and spoke up abruptly, giving him a massive start!
"Brother Xiao, what are you thinking about so deeply that you didn't even notice me walking up?"
"N-nothing... Just lost in thought. What is it, Luolu? Is dinner ready? I'll call the others down to eat!"
